Thirty-seven years ago today, on a frosty Sunday in 1988, Belinda Carlisle gave the world the most beautiful ache it never saw coming.
“Love Never Dies” – the sixth and final single from her multi-platinum masterpiece Heaven on Earth – slipped into record stores like a secret whispered under Christmas lights. And the packaging? Pure late-80s fever-dream genius:
A 7″ gatefold die-cut picture sleeve shaped like a heart that literally opened to reveal Belinda in a snow-dusted white gown
A 12″ Limited Edition “Christmas Advent Calendar” sleeve with 24 tiny perforated doors you could open each day leading to Christmas Eve (Belinda hidden behind door 24, of course)
A CD single bundled with three glossy “personality prints” – three different black-and-white portraits that fans immediately started pinning above their beds like sacred icons
It was peak Belinda magic: glamour, romance, and just enough Catholic-girl mysticism to make you believe in forever.

Written by Charlotte Caffey (Go-Go’s), Tom Kelly, and Billy Steinberg – the same team that gave us “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” and Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” – “Love Never Dies” is a cathedral-sized torch song wrapped in Phil Spector bells, swirling strings, and that unmistakable Carlisle voice that somehow sounds like heartbreak and hope had a baby. The lyric “I’ll never say goodbye / Love never dies” hits like a vow you make at 2 a.m. when the snow is falling and the radio won’t let you sleep.
The video? Shot in icy monochrome on a windswept beach in Malibu at dawn, Belinda in a flowing black cape, hair whipping like a hurricane, singing straight into the camera like she’s daring the ocean to take her. It’s been called “the goth cousin of ‘Heaven Is a Place on Earth’” and it still gives chills. MTV played it on a loop that December, sandwiched between Def Leppard and New Order, and somehow it fit perfectly.
Chart-wise, it was the little single that could:
#1 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart for two weeks
Top 10 in Canada and Australia
#11 in the UK (kept out of the Top 10 only because Stock Aitken Waterman had the entire chart on lock that Christmas)
But the real magic happened in bedrooms and cars and roller rinks across the world. This was the song you slow-danced to at the winter formal when you were 15 and terrified to tell your crush how you felt. The song you cried to in the back seat when your parents were fighting. The song you played on repeat the first Christmas after someone you loved moved away.
Belinda herself has said it’s the most personal track on the album. In a 1989 Rolling Stone interview she admitted: “That lyric – ‘Love never dies’ – I wrote it thinking about my mom. About people you lose touch with but never stop loving. Turns out the world needed to hear it too.”
Today, thirty-seven years later, the song is having another moment. Gen Z discovered it through a viral TikTok sound (“I’ll never say goodbye…”) that’s been used in 3.2 million videos – everything from wedding proposals in the snow to soldiers coming home to their dogs. Spotify streams jumped 400 % last December alone. There’s even a petition with 40,000 signatures begging Belinda to perform it on her 2026 farewell tour.
And the collectors? Still losing their minds. A sealed copy of the Advent Calendar 12″ sold at auction last month for £2,800. Someone on Depop is currently asking $1,500 for the heart-shaped 7″ with all the flaps still intact. (Good luck, babe.)
So tonight, wherever you are, pour a glass of something warm, dim the lights, and let those cathedral bells ring out, and remember:
Love never dies. It just puts on a white gown, steps into the snow, and waits for you to catch up.
Happy 37th birthday to the winter song that still breaks and heals us in the same breath.
