Oscar Legend’s Daughter and Wealthy Husband Found Dead in Running Car on Highway – What Really Happened?

A prominent San Francisco arts patron and her husband were found dead under mysterious circumstances inside a running vehicle on Monday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Judith Sheldon, 84, the daughter of acclaimed filmmaker William Wyler, and her husband, Wylie Sheldon, 86, were discovered inside a red Jeep Compass parked on the shoulder of Interstate 5 near Redding.
Both were found unresponsive and were pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency efforts by medical personnel, the highway patrol said. Judith was seated in the driver’s seat, while Wylie was in the passenger seat.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of death, although the San Francisco Chronicle reported that it was believed to be related to a medical issue.
Some have speculated that the deaths may have been linked to an extreme heat warning in effect that day, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. However, the highway patrol has not indicated whether the heat played any role.
In recent years, the couple had attended a number of San Francisco arts events, including San Francisco Performances gatherings in 2016 and 2022. Judith also served as co-chair of the organization’s 43rd season gala.
She was the board chair of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, an organization dedicated to preserving silent cinema, and members of that community described her as a deeply valued presence. She frequently hosted welcome gatherings at her San Francisco home.
“We are reeling from this news,” Anita Monga, artistic director of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, told the Chronicle. “Judy and Wylie were very dear to us, supportive and a positive presence at all our events.”
Sheldon also appeared in several television productions during the 1950s, earning a number of screen credits during that period.
Her father, William Wyler, received numerous accolades for directing films such as “The Best Years of Our Lives” and “Wuthering Heights,” and holds the record for the most nominations for the Academy Award for Best Director.
