Jailed Uncle’s Reckless A66 Chase: The Tragic Road That Claimed His Nephew’s Life
The A66 – a busy dual carriageway stretching across North East England – has once again become the scene of a devastating collision that claimed seven lives. On the night of August 22, 2026, a Volkswagen Passat was driving the wrong way down the South Bank section of the road near Middlesbrough, Teesside. The vehicle smashed head-on into a marked armed-response police car, killing two officers and five young men.
Among the dead was Makai Saddington, 18, from the Teesside area. Tragically, one of the victims was the nephew of Aaron Saddington, 23, who had been convicted and jailed only months earlier for driving dangerously on the exact same road.
In June 2026, Aaron Saddington was sentenced to 20 months in prison at Teesside Crown Court after admitting charges of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance. The court heard that on May 6, 2026, while being pursued by police for erratic driving, Saddington fled by steering his car straight into oncoming traffic on the A66. Police were investigating the August crash as part of a larger operation targeting “joyriders” believed to be linked to organised crime and ram raids.
Makai Saddington and four others – Theo Rae, Cole Worthy, Michael Cahill, and Jacob Matusiak – were in the Passat. Reports suggest the group was using cloned number plates and may have been attempting to evade police after a previous police pursuit. The five young men had no driving experience beyond a learner’s licence, and the car was not registered to them.
Cleveland Police have arrested 12 people in connection with the crash, including nine men and three women, on suspicion of involvement in organised crime. The incident has prompted an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) into the police pursuit.
The road A66 is one of the busiest in the North East, with high traffic volumes and multiple junctions. Wrong-way driving on dual carriageways is notoriously dangerous, often resulting from high-speed chases, impaired driving, or deliberate evasion.
