A 15-year-old Canadian girl has been accused of setting fire to a professional baseball team’s charter bus while the players were sleeping at a nearby hotel, completely destroying the vehicle and all its contents.

The fire broke out around 1:50 a.m. outside Blue Cross Park in downtown Winnipeg, where the Kane County Cougars’ bus was parked during the team’s road trip to Canada, police said.

When firefighters arrived at the ballpark — home of the Winnipeg Goldeyes — the tour bus was already fully engulfed in flames.

The Kane County Cougars, an independent professional team based in Geneva, Illinois, were in Winnipeg for a three-game series against the Goldeyes when the incident occurred, just hours after their second game.

Authorities confirmed that the entire bus and everything inside it were destroyed. The Cougars reported that players lost equipment and personal belongings in the fire, though no injuries were reported.

According to ABC7 Chicago, the team was staying at a hotel in Winnipeg at the time of the blaze.

Charred remains of the Kane County Cougars' charter bus on a grassy area next to a road, with a modern building in the background.

Police said a bystander noticed someone inside the burning bus and helped the person escape before emergency services arrived. Officers later arrested two teenagers suspected of deliberately starting the fire.

The 15-year-old girl was charged with arson causing damage to property and possession of incendiary material. She was subsequently released on an undertaking into the custody of a responsible adult.

Under Canadian law, an undertaking is a formal promise to appear in court and comply with any conditions set by the court.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service extinguished the fire.

The Cougars noted that the Winnipeg Goldeyes assisted in arranging a replacement bus so the team could travel to Fargo, North Dakota, for their weekend series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. The team’s Iowa-based bus company, Windstar, is sending another vehicle to bring the Cougars back to Illinois after the series concludes.
