Good Morning Britain was halted for a “devastating” news announcement on Tuesday (October 14).
During today’s instalment of the popular ITV show, presenters Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley brought viewers up to speed with the latest developments from across Britain and internationally.
They were accompanied in the studio by Laura Tobin, who provided regular meteorological updates, whilst Ranvir Singh took care of the remaining news stories of the day.
Susanna revealed tragic developments from Gaza early in the programme, following the release of 20 Israeli hostages and hundreds of Palestinian detainees on Monday (October 13) as part of a US-supported ceasefire agreement.
“After a night of celebration over the Gaza peace deal, the world’s waking up to a new phase of both hope and uncertainty this morning,” Susanna commenced, reports Wales Online.
“There are questions over whether Hamas will fully disarm, whether the new governance of Gaza will take hold, and, crucially, when will all of the bodies of the dead hostages be returned to their families.”
Richard continued: “Well, there are some in Israel now claiming that Hamas has already breached the terms of the deal with the failure to return those dead bodies.”
The presenters subsequently passed over to correspondent Richard Gaisford, who was broadcasting live from the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.
Richard explained: “You don’t have to be a scholar of history to know that just because you want something to happen and there’s often conflict, whether you’re a President, a Prime Minister, anyone else, it’s not always going to happen.
“Certainly there is momentum at the moment, Sir Keir Starmer saying yesterday, ‘We really need to start on this right now.’
“But there are stumbling blocks. The fact that Hamas has only returned four out of what’s expected to be 28 bodies of hostages who died whilst in captivity in Gaza is certainly a problem.”
He continued: “There are good logistical reasons as to why that might be because of destruction there, but many here in Israel are wondering whether Hamas is going to live up to its side of the deal.”
Under the ceasefire agreement, all of the hostages – including the deceased – should have been handed over to Israel by yesterday morning.US President Donald Trump hailed a “tremendous day for the Middle East” as he and regional leaders signed a document to cement his Gaza ceasefire deal.
