PRISON TARGET: Bounty placed on former teacher jailed for life over murder of thirteen-month-old adoptive baby
A former secondary school teacher sentenced to die behind bars for the brutal murder of a baby he planned to adopt has reportedly become the target of a prison bounty. Thirty-seven-year-old Jamie Varley received a whole life order following an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court that exposed months of systemic abuse against thirteen-month-old Preston Davey. Fellow inmates have reportedly offered illicit rewards to target the child killer inside the high-security prison estate.
Preston had been placed into the temporary care of Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, by Oldham Council after social services removed the infant under an emergency care order. However, prosecutors revealed that the toddler endured relentless physical assaults and severe neglect during his four months at the couple’s Blackpool residence. McGowan-Fazakerley was separately convicted of allowing the child’s death and handed a twenty-five-year custodial sentence.
During the sentencing hearing, Mr Justice Turner addressed the former educator directly, stating that he committed the murder and must remain incarcerated for the remainder of his natural life without any prospect of parole. The rare whole life order places Varley into an infamous cohort of fewer than seventy prisoners across Britain serving indefinite terms, including baby-killer nurse Lucy Letby and former police officer Wayne Couzens.
The court heard devastating emotional testimony from Preston’s biological mother, Sarah Davey, who declared that she would never forgive Varley for stealing her child’s future. Senior Crown Prosecution Service official Karen Tonge described the prosecution as one of the most horrific cases of her legal career. She emphasized that both men completely betrayed their fundamental legal duty to protect the vulnerable child entrusted to them.
