“Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira deeply mourns the loss suffered by Lucas Trejo’s family,” the club said after authorities confirmed the heartbreaking discovery following approximately 74 hours of continuous rescue efforts.
Before the tragic confirmation, Trejo had reportedly joined relatives, teammates, volunteers and rescue crews searching through the rubble, refusing to give up hope that his loved ones might somehow be found alive.
As each hour passed, hope gradually faded, but the footballer continued waiting for news while emergency workers battled dangerous conditions created by collapsed buildings and repeated aftershocks.
Sadly, that hope ended when rescuers located the bodies of his wife and children beneath the debris.
The tragedy unfolded after two massive earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck northern Venezuela within hours of each other, causing widespread destruction across several regions, particularly La Guaira. Thousands of buildings were damaged or destroyed as rescue teams rushed to search for survivors trapped beneath collapsed structures.
Authorities say the disaster has already claimed well over a thousand lives, while thousands more have been injured and tens of thousands remain missing or displaced as international rescue operations continue.
Trejo was away from his family when the disaster struck, leaving him powerless as communication collapsed and rescue operations unfolded.
The Argentine defender had built much of his professional career in Venezuela after playing in several countries across Latin America and Europe. Earlier this year, he joined Club Sport Marítimo de La Guaira, where teammates quickly rallied around him after learning of the unimaginable loss.
