Search For Missing Kentucky Teen Marly Kinney Ends In Tragedy As Investigation Continues
The search for 19-year-old Marly Kinney has come to a heartbreaking conclusion after authorities recovered her body from Grayson Lake in eastern Kentucky, ending a five-day, multi-agency operation that drew dozens of emergency responders and volunteers.
Officials confirmed the recovery Sunday afternoon, bringing an end to an extensive search that had involved dive teams, sonar equipment, drones, helicopters, K-9 units, and specialized search personnel. While the recovery operation has concluded, investigators emphasized that the case itself remains active as authorities await findings from the Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office.
According to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, Marly’s body was located in Grayson Lake at approximately 3:45 p.m. Sunday. Emergency crews recovered the body from the water before notifying her family, while the Carter County Coroner responded to the scene as required under Kentucky law.

Officials confirmed the remains were identified as Marly Kinney, a 19-year-old from Ashland who disappeared on June 24 after spending the afternoon on a rented pontoon boat with a group of friends.
The search operation had grown into one of the region’s largest recent missing-person responses.
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife coordinated the effort alongside Kentucky State Police, local fire departments, emergency management agencies, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and numerous volunteers. Search crews repeatedly used side-scan sonar, underwater equipment, aerial drones, boats, helicopters, and trained K-9 teams while adjusting search areas as new information became available.
Weather conditions and the size of Grayson Lake complicated the operation, requiring crews to suspend and resume searches as visibility and safety conditions changed.
Authorities have cautioned that the recovery does not conclude the investigation.
Officials stated that the exact cause and manner of Marly’s death will be determined by the Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort following a complete post-mortem examination and any additional forensic testing considered necessary.
Investigators have not announced a cause of death, nor have they publicly stated that foul play has been established. They continue gathering witness statements, reviewing evidence, and reconstructing the events leading up to Marly’s disappearance.
Earlier in the investigation, Kentucky State Police arrested 23-year-old Cameron P. Conley, the operator of the pontoon boat from which Marly was reported missing.
According to court records, Conley allegedly failed breath tests after troopers responded to the marina and was charged with operating a boat while under the influence. Authorities have repeatedly clarified that the boating-under-the-influence charge is separate from the investigation into Marly’s death.
At this stage, no homicide or other criminal charge relating to Marly’s death has been announced.
Throughout the search, Marly’s family publicly thanked the emergency responders, volunteers, and community members who participated in the effort.
Supporters shared missing-person posters across social media while dozens of volunteers searched shorelines in hopes of bringing the teenager home. The case attracted significant attention across Kentucky, with many community members following daily updates from search teams.
Following Sunday’s recovery, attention has shifted from search operations to the ongoing investigative process.
Investigators are expected to continue reviewing witness interviews, digital evidence, and the timeline surrounding the boating trip.
The medical examiner’s findings will likely become an important part of determining exactly how Marly died. Officials have not indicated when those results will be released, noting that forensic examinations often require additional time before conclusions can be reached.
For Marly’s family, the discovery ends days of uncertainty but begins a new period of mourning.
While the extensive search effort has officially concluded, authorities say the investigation remains ongoing. Detectives continue asking anyone with information relevant to the events of June 24 to contact investigators as they work to establish a complete account of what occurred on Grayson Lake.
The final determination regarding the circumstances of Marly Kinney’s death will ultimately depend on the evidence gathered during the investigation and the official findings issued by the Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office.
