A Wisconsin youth football game took a shocking turn after a father ran onto the field and tripped a 9-year-old player who was sprinting toward what appeared to be a touchdown. Newly released police body-camera footage has now shed more light on what happened after the incident and what the man told officers.
The incident occurred on August 22 during a U-10 game between the Case Eagles and Milwaukee Colts at Case High School in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin. The young Eagles player, wearing No. 88, was running down the field with the ball when a 41-year-old parent supporting the opposing Milwaukee Colts entered the playing area and extended his leg.
The child fell to the ground, while the adult also went down. Video of the incident quickly circulated online, prompting widespread outrage from spectators and parents who believed the adult had deliberately interfered with a child during the game.
Police were called to the scene shortly before 11 a.m. By the time officers arrived, both the man and the child had left the immediate area. Investigators were given information about the man’s vehicle by another parent, and officers subsequently stopped him roughly half a mile from the field.
Body-camera footage released later shows the man acknowledging that he had entered the field. During the conversation with officers, he explained that he had been worried about his own son after seeing what was happening on the field.
According to the footage, he said there were bigger players around his son and that he became “impulsive.” He also told police that his son had previously broken his arm twice, suggesting that fear for his child’s safety contributed to his decision to intervene.
The father also apologized to the team and coach. However, when questioned about whether he had kicked the young player, he characterized the encounter differently, saying that the two had effectively slid into one another as he attempted to stop the play.
Police determined that the incident warranted a disorderly-conduct citation. Investigators also reviewed whether the circumstances could support a child-abuse charge. According to the Mount Pleasant Police Department, that more serious charge was not supported because the child did not suffer bodily harm. The Racine County District Attorney’s Office agreed with that assessment.
Fortunately, the 9-year-old was not injured. But the incident left many parents deeply disturbed, particularly because the player was participating in a youth sporting event where adults are expected to provide protection and set an example.
The youth football league subsequently banned the parent from attending games, while the Milwaukee Colts organization was reportedly fined. The incident has also reignited concerns about increasingly aggressive behavior by adults at children’s sporting events.
For many spectators, the most troubling part was not simply that an adult entered the field—it was that a child suddenly became involved in an adult’s emotional reaction to a football play.
