In a case that has reignited fierce debates about domestic violence sentencing in the UK, shocking CCTV footage has captured a 34-year-old roofer subjecting his terrified girlfriend to repeated physical assaults, including punching, kicking, and spitting on her in their family home. Despite the graphic evidence, Spencer Dean from Ashford, Kent, was spared prison time and instead received a community order, leaving his ex-partner Marie (not her real name) devastated and determined to speak out for other victims.

The couple lived together with Marie’s two children in Ashford. What began as a relationship gradually turned controlling and abusive as Dean became increasingly jealous and possessive. Marie described how he slowly isolated her by removing her from social media, making her feel guilty for seeing family, and creating arguments with friends until her only outings were school runs or cleaning jobs.

The abuse escalated over several months, with Dean’s violent outbursts often occurring while the children were in the house. Horrific CCTV footage, installed originally to monitor the kids, ended up documenting multiple attacks. In one disturbing clip from October 10, Dean is seen grabbing Marie by the neck, punching her, kicking her, and spitting at her in the kitchen. Other videos show him throwing objects at her, violently pulling her hair, shoving her into furniture, and raining punches on her face and head while backing her against a wall.

In one particularly upsetting sequence, Dean punches Marie so hard she falls backwards onto the sofa before hitting her again. Another shows him throwing her down onto their bed while she begs him to stop and get off her. Throughout the clips, Marie appears desperate to de-escalate the situation, trying to keep him at arm’s length as Dean seethes with rage.
