In a case that has reignited fierce debates about domestic violence sentencing in the UK, shocking CCTV footage has captured a 34-year-old roofer subjecting his terrified girlfriend to repeated physical assaults, including punching, kicking, and spitting on her in their family home. Despite the graphic evidence, Spencer Dean from Ashford, Kent, was spared prison time and instead received a community order, leaving his ex-partner Marie (not her real name) devastated and determined to speak out for other victims.
The couple lived together with Marie’s two children in Ashford. What began as a relationship gradually turned controlling and abusive as Dean became increasingly jealous and possessive. Marie described how he slowly isolated her by removing her from social media, making her feel guilty for seeing family, and creating arguments with friends until her only outings were school runs or cleaning jobs.
The abuse escalated over several months, with Dean’s violent outbursts often occurring while the children were in the house. Horrific CCTV footage, installed originally to monitor the kids, ended up documenting multiple attacks. In one disturbing clip from October 10, Dean is seen grabbing Marie by the neck, punching her, kicking her, and spitting at her in the kitchen. Other videos show him throwing objects at her, violently pulling her hair, shoving her into furniture, and raining punches on her face and head while backing her against a wall.
In one particularly upsetting sequence, Dean punches Marie so hard she falls backwards onto the sofa before hitting her again. Another shows him throwing her down onto their bed while she begs him to stop and get off her. Throughout the clips, Marie appears desperate to de-escalate the situation, trying to keep him at arm’s length as Dean seethes with rage.
The violence came to light in March when Marie secretly texted a neighbour to call the police, saying she had reached “the end of her tether.” Officers arrived to find her with a cut and bruising under her eye. Upon reviewing the extensive CCTV footage spanning months, authorities built a strong case against Dean.
At Margate Magistrates’ Court, Dean admitted three counts of assault by beating, two counts of criminal damage, and one count of cultivating cannabis. He appeared for sentencing via videolink from HMP Elmley on May 12. Despite the severity of the offences — some happening near the children — magistrates, who were not shown the full footage, followed probation recommendations and handed him a 12-month community order instead of custody. This includes 180 hours of unpaid work, 30 rehabilitation sessions, and a six-month drug rehabilitation programme. He was also issued a two-year restraining order preventing contact with Marie or approaching her home.
Dean had already spent 12 weeks in custody awaiting sentencing. His defence described the relationship as “toxic” and claimed he was “genuinely remorseful.” However, Marie expressed shock at the outcome, feeling it failed to reflect the terror she endured.
The court heard how Dean used the cannabis grow operation in the house as leverage, threatening that Marie would lose her children if it was discovered since it was her property. This fear kept her silent for longer than she wanted.
Marie has now bravely broken her silence, hoping her story empowers other victims. “If you are going through this, no matter what they say or hold against you, you can get out,” she said. She emphasised gathering evidence safely and having support. “Emotionally, I’m broken, I’m confused, I hate myself – and I hate what my kids are going through because of all of this.”
This case highlights critical issues in the justice system’s handling of domestic abuse. While Dean’s sentence includes rehabilitation, many argue that repeated physical violence captured on camera, especially around children, should result in custodial time. Domestic abuse affects one in four women and one in seven men in their lifetime, with police receiving a call every 30 seconds in the UK.
Support services remain vital. Victims can contact the Freephone National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247, run by Refuge. For men, Respect Men’s Advice Line is 0808 8010 327. Immediate danger requires calling 999.
Beyond the individual tragedy, this story raises broader questions about coercive control, the role of technology in proving abuse, and whether current sentencing guidelines adequately protect victims and deter perpetrators. As Marie rebuilds her life with her children, her courage in sharing the footage serves as both a warning and a beacon of hope for those still trapped in similar situations.
The case also underscores the hidden nature of domestic violence. Many victims appear to function normally while suffering silently. Marie’s isolation tactics — common in abusive relationships — prevented her from reaching out sooner. Her message is clear: evidence matters, and escape is possible.
As public awareness grows through cases like this, pressure mounts on authorities to strengthen responses. For Marie, the community order feels insufficient, but her decision to speak out may help prevent others from enduring the same nightmare.
In the end, this is more than a local crime story — it’s a stark reminder that behind closed doors in seemingly ordinary homes, terror can unfold while society debates what justice truly looks like.
