A single text message containing the words “I S.T.R.A.N.G.L.E.D HIM” has become the most disturbing piece of evidence in one of the most harrowing child death cases to reach the British courts in recent years.
Jamie Varley, a 37-year-old secondary school teacher from Blackpool, stands accused of the murder and sexual abuse of 13-month-old Preston Davey, the toddler he and his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, had adopted just months earlier. Prosecutors claim the message, allegedly sent by Varley to his partner while the baby was being rushed to hospital, reveals a horrifying glimpse into the reality behind the couple’s seemingly picture-perfect family life.
The case has sparked widespread outrage, not only because of the shocking nature of the allegations, but because Preston had reportedly been taken to hospital on three separate occasions with unexplained injuries in the short time he lived with the couple — yet authorities allegedly saw “no safeguarding concerns” just weeks before his death.
A Life That Should Have Been Protected
Preston Davey was just 13 months old when he collapsed at the couple’s home in Blackpool on 27 July 2023. He was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, where he suffered a cardiac arrest and could not be saved. What should have been a devastating but isolated tragedy has instead unravelled into accusations of systematic abuse.
According to the prosecution, Preston suffered more than 40 traumatic injuries in the final months of his short life. Medical experts have told the court that some of these injuries were consistent with sexual abuse. The toddler had been admitted to hospital three times in just four months after being placed with Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley in April 2023.
Despite these repeated hospital visits, social services and other agencies reportedly assessed the family and concluded there were no major concerns. That decision is now under intense scrutiny as the public demands answers about how so many warning signs appear to have been missed.
The Text That Shocked the Court
One of the most chilling moments in the ongoing trial at Preston Crown Court came when prosecutors revealed a text message allegedly sent by Jamie Varley to his partner on 8 July 2023 — just weeks before Preston’s death.
The message reportedly read: “Your son’s in hospital. I strangled him. Jokes. Just give me a call when done.”

Varley has denied the allegations, insisting he never harmed the child and claiming the message was intended as a dark joke. However, prosecutors argue the text, combined with the pattern of injuries, paints a far more sinister picture.
Varley also faces multiple charges including two counts of assault by penetration, five counts of cruelty to a child, grievous bodily harm, sexual assault of a child, and numerous counts related to taking and distributing indecent images.
His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, denies causing or allowing the death of Preston, along with child cruelty and sexual assault charges.
A Teacher’s Double Life?
Jamie Varley worked as a teacher at South Shore Academy in Blackpool. Colleagues and neighbours described him as someone who appeared dedicated to children. The revelation that he and his partner had adopted a vulnerable toddler only added to the sense of betrayal many in the community now feel.
During police interviews played in court, Varley could be heard becoming emotional and telling officers he would “fight them till the day I die” to prove his innocence. In other footage, he is seen collapsing in distress at the hospital when told Preston would not survive.
Yet prosecutors claim the evidence tells a different story — one of routine physical, emotional, and sexual abuse carried out behind closed doors.
Systemic Failures or Tragic Oversight?
The case has raised deeply uncomfortable questions about the adoption and safeguarding system. How could a child with multiple unexplained injuries be returned to the same home time after time? Why were concerns not escalated more aggressively?
Social workers and health professionals involved with the family are expected to face questioning as the trial continues. One social worker reportedly visited the home shortly after one of Preston’s hospital admissions and concluded there were no issues.
Preston’s biological family and others close to the case have expressed heartbreak that more was not done to protect him. Adoption processes are meant to be rigorous, especially when placing vulnerable young children, yet this tragedy suggests serious cracks in the system.
A Town in Shock
Blackpool, already a town struggling with its own social challenges, has been left reeling by the case. Local residents who knew the couple have spoken of their disbelief that such alleged abuse could have happened undetected.
Vigils have been held for little Preston, with many leaving flowers, teddy bears, and messages calling for justice. The image of a smiling, innocent baby boy now contrasts painfully with the horror described in court.
Child protection experts say the case highlights the need for better training, more robust monitoring of adoptive families, and faster intervention when injuries in very young children cannot be properly explained.
Justice for Preston
As the trial continues, Jamie Varley continues to deny all charges. His partner also maintains his innocence on the counts he faces.
For Preston Davey’s biological family and everyone who has followed this heartbreaking story, the coming weeks will be agonising. They want answers. They want accountability. Most of all, they want to know why a defenceless 13-month-old boy was not protected when so many opportunities apparently existed to save him.
The text message “I S.T.R.A.N.G.L.E.D HIM” — whether intended as a sick joke or something far darker — has become symbolic of the entire case. A tiny child who should have been safe, loved, and protected instead became the victim of alleged horrors that are almost too painful to comprehend.
Preston Davey deserved better. His short life should have been filled with joy, not pain. As the court process unfolds, the hope is that his death will lead to real change — so that no other child slips through the cracks the way he so tragically did.
