In a case that has stunned authorities in two countries and horrified parents around the world, a French mother and her partner have been arrested after allegedly blindfolding their two young sons, aged 3 and 5, and abandoning them deep in a remote Portuguese forest as part of what they claimed was a “treasure hunt game.”
Marine Rousseau, 41, a self-described sexologist, and her boyfriend Marc Ballabriga, 55, a former law enforcement officer, were taken into custody on Thursday while calmly sitting at an outdoor café terrace in Fátima, Portugal — just days after the two terrified boys were found screaming and crying on the side of a road.
The shocking incident has raised disturbing questions about parental cruelty, twisted “educational” games, and how two adults could allegedly leave helpless children alone in the wilderness before enjoying pastries and coffee as if nothing had happened.
The “Game” That Turned Into a Nightmare
According to Portuguese police, the couple had driven the boys to a heavily wooded area in central Portugal on Tuesday. They allegedly blindfolded the children and told them they were playing a treasure hunt. The boys were instructed to dig in the ground with their bare hands to find a hidden toy — but only after their parents had driven away.
When the children eventually removed their blindfolds, their mother, her partner, and the car had vanished.
Hours later, a passing motorist discovered the two boys wandering alone beside a major road, visibly distressed and crying. The children told rescuers their parents had left them as part of a game. Emergency services were called, and the boys were taken to safety.
Portuguese authorities launched an immediate search for the parents, describing the act as potential child abandonment and endangerment. The couple’s French-registered vehicle was later spotted near a café in Fátima, a popular pilgrimage town about 200 kilometres from where the boys were abandoned.
CCTV footage obtained by investigators reportedly shows Rousseau and Ballabriga sitting relaxed at the café terrace, appearing completely unconcerned. They were arrested without resistance while enjoying their meal.
A Mother’s Shocking Response
When questioned by police, Rousseau allegedly showed little remorse. In one reported statement, she claimed the boys “don’t even know how scared I was” — a remark that has drawn widespread condemnation online and in the media for its apparent self-centredness.
Ballabriga, who has a background in law enforcement, has also been detained on suspicion of child abuse and domestic violence. Both remain in custody as the investigation continues.
The two boys are currently being cared for by Portuguese social services while arrangements are made for their return to France, where their biological father is said to be preparing to take custody.
Outrage and Questions Mount
The case has triggered intense public outrage, particularly among parents who cannot fathom how any adult could treat young children in such a manner. Social media platforms have been flooded with comments calling the couple’s actions “unforgivable,” “cruel beyond words,” and “a new low in parental neglect.”
Child protection experts have condemned the so-called “game” as psychologically damaging and physically dangerous. Leaving blindfolded toddlers alone in dense woodland exposes them to risks ranging from dehydration and injury to encounters with wildlife or passing vehicles.
Portuguese prosecutors are treating the incident as a serious case of child endangerment. If convicted, the couple could face significant prison time. French authorities are also involved due to the family’s nationality and are monitoring the case closely.
Neighbours in France who knew Rousseau described her as someone who often posted about alternative parenting and wellness topics online. Few could reconcile that public persona with the allegations now facing her.
A Community and International Response
The swift arrest of the couple has been praised by Portuguese police, who acted quickly after the boys were found. The case has also highlighted strong cross-border cooperation between Portuguese and French law enforcement.
Back in France, the boys’ biological father has reportedly spoken to media outlets, expressing both relief that his children are safe and anger at what they endured. He is said to be making arrangements to bring them home as soon as possible.
Child psychologists have warned that the traumatic experience could have lasting effects on the young brothers, who may require extensive counselling and support to process being abandoned by the very people they trusted most.
A Disturbing Trend?
While cases of deliberate child abandonment are rare, this incident has reignited conversations about so-called “tough love” or extreme parenting methods that cross the line into abuse. Some online commentators have pointed to a disturbing rise in parents using social media to promote increasingly bizarre or dangerous “educational challenges” involving their children.
Authorities in both Portugal and France have used the case to remind the public that any act that places a child in immediate danger can result in serious criminal charges, regardless of how the parent tries to justify it as a “game.”
For now, the two little boys are safe. But the emotional scars of being blindfolded, told to dig for treasure, and then realising their parents had driven away may take years to heal.
As Marine Rousseau and Marc Ballabriga sit in a Portuguese prison awaiting further proceedings, the focus remains on the innocent victims — two small children who went from playing what they believed was a fun game to facing real terror in the woods.
Their mother’s casual arrest at a café, seemingly without a care in the world, has only deepened the sense of disbelief and anger surrounding this deeply disturbing case.
