Minutes After the Bridge Chaos, a Young Soldier Liam Potts Vanished Into the Tyne.
A quiet Northumberland village became the centre of a tragic and still-unresolved mystery in the early hours of 15 August 2026. Liam Potts, a 22-year-old soldier serving with the Coldstream Guards, failed to return home after a night out with friends. Three days later his body was recovered from the River Tyne near Wylam Bridge.
The sequence of events that night has left investigators and the public with more questions than answers. Shortly before Liam was last seen, officers received reports of a disturbance at The Boathouse pub. Within minutes a car collided with a group of pedestrians on Wylam Bridge. A man and a woman, both in their twenties, suffered serious injuries. Two men later fled the scene on foot.
Liam was on the bridge at the time of the collision. Police have repeatedly confirmed he was neither an occupant of the vehicle nor struck by it. Yet he entered the water within minutes of the incident. He was last sighted at approximately 00:20 heading from the bridge towards the centre of Wylam. He never arrived.
Specialist marine officers, supported by mountain rescue teams and the coastguard, searched the river and surrounding area for three days. On the afternoon of 18 August a body was recovered close to the bridge. Formal identification has yet to be completed, but Liam’s family have been informed and are being supported by officers.
The investigation has shifted significantly since the discovery. Initially police stated they did not believe there was any third-party involvement. Further enquiries, however, led to the re-arrest of two men, aged 22 and 23, on suspicion of manslaughter. Both have been released on bail while inquiries continue. Detectives are examining whether the disturbance and the subsequent collision on the bridge are directly linked to Liam entering the water.
Liam had joined the Coldstream Guards at eighteen. He completed training at Catterick Garrison and took part in the funeral procession of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022. Colleagues and friends have described him as the heart and soul of any room. His father, Paul Potts, later issued a public statement urging people to hold, cuddle and cherish their loved ones, adding that Liam would have raised a glass to that sentiment.
Floral tributes appeared quickly on Wylam Bridge. A book of condolence was opened and a fundraising appeal for the search and rescue volunteers raised tens of thousands of pounds within days. Online messages described the loss as heartbreaking and spoke of a young man with his whole life ahead of him.
The case continues to attract attention because of the narrow window between the chaos on the bridge and Liam’s disappearance into the river. He was present at a violent incident yet uninjured by the car. He left the scene on foot and was never seen again. Police are still trying to establish the precise reasons he entered the water so soon after the collision.
Northumbria Police’s Major Investigation Team is leading the inquiry. They have appealed for any further information, dashcam footage or witness accounts from the early hours of 15 August. The two men remain on bail. A report is being prepared for the coroner.
For Liam’s family the practical investigation is only part of the ordeal. The deeper pain lies in the unanswered questions that still surround those final minutes on the bridge and the dark water below. A young soldier who had served his country with distinction went out with friends one Saturday night and never came home. The circumstances of his final moments remain under active investigation, and the community that searched for him continues to wait for clarity.
