A brutal knife attack in north Belfast has sent shockwaves across the UK, with 30-year-old Sudanese asylum seeker Hadi Alodid charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to decapitate his neighbor in a frenzied assault captured on video. The incident on Kinnaird Avenue on Monday evening has not only left the victim, Stephen Ogilvie, fighting for his life with life-changing injuries but has also sparked violent unrest, highlighting deep tensions over immigration and community safety.
According to court proceedings at Belfast Magistrates’ Court, Alodid was seen straddling Ogilvie and slashing at his head and neck with a kitchen knife in what witnesses described as an attempted beheading. Bystanders, including one hero armed with a son’s hurling stick, bravely intervened to stop the attack, holding the suspect until police arrived. Ogilvie, a man in his 40s and an NHS radiology technician, suffered devastating wounds: he lost his left eye, sustained severe damage to his right eye, deep cuts to his face and head, and long lacerations across his back. He remains in hospital in serious but stable condition, with reports indicating he has been in ICU as his family keeps vigil by his bedside.
In a heartbreaking statement, Ogilvie’s family expressed their devastation: “We are completely devastated by the horrific attack on our loved one. This has been a massive shock to our whole family, and right now our only priority is being at his bedside and helping him recover.” They urged calm, condemning the subsequent riots and violence that saw vehicles and homes torched, emphasizing that unrest is unwelcome and pleading for peaceful responses. The family also thanked local heroes and medical staff for saving Stephen’s life, while appealing against false rumors circulating online that added to their distress.
Adding a shocking layer to the case, friends of Alodid have revealed his unexpected background. The suspect, originally from a prominent and politically connected family in northern Sudan, reportedly served briefly as a police officer in Khartoum before leaving the country. One friend, Azheri Omer, who knew him since 2022 in Sudan, shared details of his past. Alodid was born partly in Saudi Arabia but returned to Sudan for education. He entered Northern Ireland via Dublin in 2023, claimed asylum, and was granted leave to remain until 2028. Reports also suggest Ogilvie, described by neighbors as a kind and vulnerable man, had helped Alodid move into a nearby apartment just days before the attack.
While in hospital for a hand injury sustained during the incident, Alodid allegedly told staff, “I killed someone, I don’t know if they’re dead,” and threatened to kill an NHS radiographer. He faces additional charges of possessing a bladed article in public and threats to kill. Alodid appeared in court via video link, refused legal representation, and made no reply to the charges through an Arabic interpreter. He has been remanded in custody until July 8.
The attack has ignited two nights of disorder in Belfast and beyond, with anti-immigration protests turning violent. Masked groups targeted properties believed to house migrants, setting fires and clashing with police. Authorities, including UK leaders, have condemned the riots while calling for unity. Counter-terrorism police are involved but have not classified the incident as terrorism, keeping an open mind on the motive.
This tragedy raises urgent questions about integration, asylum processes, and street safety in Northern Ireland. Neighbors described Ogilvie as a helpful individual who extended kindness to newcomers, making the alleged betrayal even more poignant. As Alodid’s past as a former Sudanese policeman emerges, many wonder about the vetting of individuals granted refuge and the risks to local communities.
Ogilvie’s family continues to focus on his recovery, highlighting the human impact amid the broader debates. Medical teams are working to address his severe injuries, which doctors describe as life-altering. The bravery of ordinary citizens who stopped the attack has been widely praised, with calls for recognition of their quick actions that likely prevented a murder.
As the case proceeds through the courts, the public remains divided between demands for stricter immigration controls and appeals for calm to avoid further division. Flowers and messages of support have appeared at the scene, symbolizing solidarity with the victim and hope for healing. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragile balance in diverse communities and the devastating consequences when trust is shattered.
The coming weeks will see more details emerge as investigations continue. For Ogilvie’s loved ones, the priority is his fight back to health. For Belfast, it’s a call to address underlying issues without descending into chaos. The story of one man’s alleged violence and another’s kindness gone wrong continues to captivate and concern the nation.
