The case surrounding the death of Carolina Flores Gómez has taken a major turn after authorities confirmed the arrest of her mother-in-law, Erika María Herrera, in Venezuela following an international manhunt.
Authorities say Herrera, 63, had been on the run since the fatal shooting of Flores inside her apartment in Mexico City on April 15. She was later located and detained in Caracas after traveling out of Mexico shortly after the incident.
Investigators allege that the killing occurred inside the victim’s home and was partially captured on a security camera installed to monitor the couple’s infant. Footage reportedly shows Herrera following Flores into a room moments before gunshots were heard.

The timing of Herrera’s departure has become a key focus. According to officials, she left Mexico the day after the shooting, prompting international coordination that ultimately led to her arrest. Authorities are now working through extradition procedures to return her to Mexico, where she is expected to face charges related to the killing.
The case has also drawn attention to the actions of Alejandro Sánchez Herrera, who was present at the residence. Reports indicate that he did not immediately contact authorities, with the delay becoming a subject of scrutiny during the investigation.
While online narratives have suggested premeditation and elaborate escape planning, officials have not publicly detailed evidence confirming that the suspect arranged a hideout in advance. Investigators are expected to examine travel records, communications, and financial activity to determine whether the movement was planned before the incident or occurred afterward.
Prosecutors are treating the case as a potential femicide, a classification used in Mexico for killings involving gender-based violence. The investigation is focusing on motive, prior family dynamics, and any documented conflicts that may help explain the events leading up to the shooting.
Public reaction in Mexico has been intense, with calls for accountability and transparency. Advocacy groups have highlighted the case as part of a broader pattern of violence against women, while also raising questions about response times and protective measures.
As proceedings move forward, authorities are expected to rely on forensic evidence, video recordings, and witness statements to establish a clear timeline. The arrest in Venezuela marks a significant development, but key questions—particularly regarding motive and planning—remain under investigation.
