São Paulo authorities have escalated their investigation into the death of a 21-year-old woman who fell 40 meters during a rope jump activity after two operators allegedly fled the scene into nearby woods. The dramatic manhunt, which involved a Military Police Águia helicopter, resulted in the arrest of the fleeing suspects and brought the total number of detained individuals to three.
The tragedy occurred when the young woman, whose name has not yet been released, climbed a platform for what she believed would be a safe rope jumping experience. Witnesses say she was secured into a harness by the crew before being pushed from the edge. However, the critical safety line was not properly attached to the main rope system. She plunged more than 40 meters to the ground in a fatal fall.
Bystanders captured the incident on video, including a conversation between operators approximately 20 seconds before the jump in which equipment concerns were reportedly raised. Immediately after the woman struck the ground, two members of the crew attempted to escape into thick brush surrounding the site to avoid responsibility, according to police reports.

São Paulo Military Police responded swiftly, deploying their Águia helicopter unit to search the forest canopy from above. Thermal imaging and ground coordination allowed officers to track the suspects’ movements through the dense vegetation. Ground teams eventually cornered and detained the two fleeing operators. A third individual, believed to be the main instructor, had already been taken into custody at the scene.
All three men are now facing serious criminal charges, including manslaughter, gross negligence, and failure to follow safety protocols. Police have seized equipment from the site and are examining harnesses, ropes, and anchoring systems. Investigators are also reviewing maintenance logs, training records, and any video evidence to determine how such a basic safety procedure was overlooked.
The victim’s family has been notified and is receiving support. Friends described the 21-year-old as an adventurous and lively young woman who had been excited about trying the activity. The incident has sparked outrage across Brazil, with many questioning the regulation of adventure tourism and extreme sports in urban and semi-urban areas.
São Paulo Civil Police have stated that the operation is under intense scrutiny. Officials from the Ministry of Tourism and Labor have announced immediate inspections of similar rope jumping and bungee-style activities across the region. Several operators have been temporarily shut down pending safety reviews.
This is not the first fatal accident involving rope jumping or bungee experiences in Brazil. Safety experts have previously warned about inconsistent oversight, inadequate training for staff, and the pressure on operators to deliver thrilling experiences quickly. Consumer protection groups have renewed calls for stricter national standards and mandatory certification for high-risk recreational activities.
The detained operators have not yet been formally charged in court, and all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Police say the investigation remains active, with forensic analysis and witness interviews continuing. Additional charges could be filed depending on the results of the ongoing probe.
The tragic death has left the local community shaken. Many residents have expressed shock that a recreational activity marketed as safe could end so catastrophically. Social media has been flooded with tributes to the victim and criticism of the apparent lack of basic safety measures.
Authorities have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional video footage to come forward. The Military Police praised the coordination between air and ground units that led to the swift capture of the fleeing suspects.
As the investigation deepens, focus remains on ensuring accountability and preventing similar tragedies in the future. The family of the 21-year-old victim has requested privacy as they grieve the sudden loss of their loved one.
The case highlights the serious risks associated with unregulated or poorly managed adventure sports and the rapid response capabilities of São Paulo’s law enforcement when lives are at stake.
