A harrowing survivor story has exposed the horrifying reality of an Australian father who attempted to murder his two young sons in a twisted plot to inflict ultimate emotional agony on his estranged wife. Spencer Connelly, now eighteen, has detailed how his father, Paul Connelly, lured him and his eight-year-old brother Fletcher with a McDonald’s takeaway treat before detonating gas cylinders inside the family hatchback. The terrifying 2012 attack left both boys with catastrophic, life-altering burns.
The horrific incident unfolded in Tasmania after Connelly picked up five-year-old Spencer and eight-year-old Fletcher from childcare and school under the guise of a backyard picnic. As the young boys sat in the vehicle eating their food, Connelly loaded two gas bottles into the boot and opened the valves. When questioned about a strange hissing sound coming from the rear seats, the father lied to his sons, claiming it was merely a new vehicle noise.
Moments later, Connelly struck a lighter, triggering a massive explosion that engulfed the vehicle’s cabin in a raging fireball. Desperate to escape the flames, young Spencer managed to leap over the centre console to force open the passenger door. During the criminal trial at the Supreme Court in Burnie, Tasmania, a jury took just one hour to convict Paul Connelly of two counts of attempted murder. Chief Justice Alan Blow sentenced the father to twenty years in prison, explicitly finding beyond reasonable doubt that Connelly attempted to murder his own children out of pure, calculated spite toward his ex-wife.
