German Stars Alarmed After Venomous Snake Spotted Near Training Base Ahead of Major Tournament
A routine day at Germany’s training camp took an unexpected turn when players encountered a venomous snake near their facilities, prompting concerns about the local wildlife.
Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich revealed that members of the national team recently spotted a snake near their training center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, sparking caution among the squad as they continue preparations for competition.
According to Kimmich, players were informed that the snake was venomous, immediately raising concerns about potential danger.
“We saw a snake yesterday, and we were told it was venomous,” Kimmich said while speaking about the incident.
The Bayern Munich star explained that although a bite would likely not be fatal, it would still require immediate medical attention and could lead to serious consequences.
“If you get bitten, you have to go to the hospital. I don’t think you would die, but it’s certainly dangerous,” he noted.
The midfielder admitted that the encounter served as a reminder that the environment in the United States can be very different from what many German players are accustomed to at home. He suggested that accidentally stepping on such an animal could result in a serious situation, leading the squad to remain vigilant during outdoor activities.
“I have the feeling that if you step on a snake like that, things could end very badly. That’s why we’re trying to keep our distance from the animals here,” Kimmich added.
The 31-year-old also expressed admiration for local residents who regularly share their environment with wildlife that many Europeans rarely encounter.
“I have respect for the people who live here. In Germany, I have the impression that there aren’t so many dangerous animals,” he said.
Reports later identified the snake as a copperhead, one of the most common venomous snake species found in North Carolina. Copperheads are responsible for a significant number of snakebite incidents across the United States each year, although their bites are rarely fatal when treated promptly.
The species is known for its distinctive copper-colored head and camouflage pattern, which often makes it difficult to spot in wooded areas, leaf-covered ground, and grassy environments. Because of this natural camouflage, accidental encounters can occur even when people are paying attention.
While the snake sighting did not disrupt Germany’s training schedule, it quickly became a talking point among fans and media covering the team’s preparations. For many supporters, it was an unusual reminder that international tournaments can present unexpected challenges beyond what happens on the field.
