Somalian Referee Receives Hero’s Welcome in Mogadishu Following US Entry Denial Ahead of World Cup
Somalian football official Omar Artan returned home to a celebratory reception in the nation’s capital after American border authorities blocked him from entering the United States for the upcoming World Cup.
Artan had made history by securing a spot on FIFA’s definitive referee selection for the tournament, a milestone that would have made him the very first individual from Somalia to officiate a World Cup match.
However, his tournament aspirations were cut short in Florida. Upon landing in Miami on a flight from Istanbul, the official was turned away by immigration authorities. FIFA subsequently verified that Artan had been removed from the competition’s roster and would not be participating in any training sessions or match assignments.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Artan revealed that border patrol agents interrogated him for nearly half a day. During the 11-hour ordeal, he presented official FIFA credentials and photographic evidence documenting his extensive career in football officiating.
“My documentation was entirely in order, and I possessed the appropriate visa,” Artan stated. “It seems to me that their issue lies with my nationality.”
Despite the disappointment, Artan was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd waving flags upon his arrival at the airport in Somalia.
“The situation occurred, and it is deeply regrettable,” Artan commented regarding his exclusion. “If God wills it, I intend to participate in the upcoming tournament.”
He also offered an inspiring message to his compatriots, adding, “This nation belongs to us, through both prosperous and challenging times. I urge our younger generation to maintain faith in our homeland. I have returned to my country, and there is truly nowhere else I would rather be.”
