A horrific tragedy has shaken the extreme sports community in Brazil after a 21-year-old thrillseeker was thrown from a notorious bridge to her death without any safety rope attached. The devastating incident occurred at the popular “Skeleton Bridge” (Ponte do Esqueleto) trail in Limeira, Sao Paulo. The victim, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, a physical education graduate from Jandira, was completely unaware that the vital lifeline had been omitted from her harness before she was launched into the air.

According to disturbing witness reports and sickening viral footage, two workers carried Ms. de Freitas in a “Superman pose” before tossing her over the edge. Horrified onlookers watched her plunge approximately 40 meters to the ground. Just seconds after she was released, panicked voices can be heard in the background screaming, “The rope, people, the rope!” The young woman suffered catastrophic multiple fractures and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

In a shocking twist after the fatal plunge, the three instructors involved—Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff (32), Vitor de Freitas Gonçalves (27), and Maicon Fernandes Cintra (42)—allegedly changed their clothes and attempted to flee into a nearby wooded area. Police officers had to request backup from additional patrol cars and an aircraft to track them down. They were arrested shortly after along the trail and are now facing charges of homicide with implied malice.

During questioning, the instructors appeared disoriented and were entirely unable to explain why the rope was disconnected. They could not remember who was supposed to attach the equipment or why a final safety inspection was skipped. While the men denied trying to escape—with Mr. Egoroff claiming he only changed his shirt because it was wet and muddy—Judge Paulo Henrique Stahlberg Natal ordered their preventive detention, citing gross negligence, the exploitation of the victim’s trust, and a clear attempt to obstruct the investigation.

According to authorities, the event was organized under the brand names “Entre Cordas” and “Ih Voei.” However, police revealed these are not officially registered companies, but rather informal groups of enthusiasts charging 180 Brazilian real ($50) per jump. Chillingly, the organizers had five more events scheduled for the coming months, and adrenaline chasers were still able to book slots even after the tragedy occurred.

Adding to the heartbreak, Ms. de Freitas had excitedly posted on social media just hours before her death. Showing off her identification bracelets and the organizers’ banner, she prophetically wrote: “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?” She was holding a GoPro-style camera during the fall, but police have been unable to locate the device. Local authorities in Limeira have expressed deep outrage, vowing legal action against the federal government for failing to restrict access to the bridge despite repeated warnings about safety hazards since early 2025.
