The family of 13-year-old Hayden has paid an emotional tribute after the teenager died when he got into difficulty while entering a lake in Leicestershire to cool off following school during the recent heatwave.
His death has prompted an outpouring of grief from relatives, friends, and members of the local community, while police continue preparing a report for the coroner to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy. According to Leicestershire Police, emergency services were called after reports that a teenage boy had entered the water before experiencing difficulties. Firefighters, ambulance crews, police officers, and specialist dive teams responded to the scene in an extensive rescue operation.

The UK Health Security Agency issued red and amber extreme heat warnings covering large areas of the country, while Leicestershire remained under an amber warning as temperatures were forecast to exceed 30°C and approach 38°C.
Emergency services have repeatedly warned that rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and quarries can remain dangerously cold beneath the surface despite high air temperatures.
Specialists explain that sudden immersion in cold water can trigger cold-water shock, disorientation, and rapid loss of swimming ability, even among confident swimmers.
Authorities continue encouraging people to choose supervised swimming locations whenever possible and to avoid entering unfamiliar open water during periods of extreme heat.
Hayden’s death has also brought renewed attention to national water safety campaigns.
Earlier this month, campaigners launched the “Save Lives for Sam” initiative, calling for greater awareness after highlighting that dozens of children lose their lives to drowning in England each year.
Water safety organizations continue urging schools, parents, and communities to educate young people about the hidden dangers associated with open water, particularly during school holidays and heatwaves when more children seek relief from high temperatures.
For Hayden’s family, however, public safety messages cannot erase the pain of losing a child.
Their tribute focused not on the circumstances of his death but on the joyful teenager they knew—a football supporter, animal lover, devoted friend, and much-loved son whose life ended far too soon.
