New details are emerging in the deadly Maldives diving tragedy after Finnish recovery divers reportedly identified what may have caused the deaths of five experienced Italian divers trapped inside an underwater cave system. According to early findings reviewed by investigators, the group may have accidentally entered the wrong tunnel while attempting to resurface after becoming disoriented deep inside the cavern. Rescue specialists now believe the divers were likely misled by what experts are describing as a dangerous “sand wall illusion” created by darkness, underwater sediment, and limited visibility inside the cave system.
The bodies of the victims were eventually recovered from a dead-end underwater corridor located approximately 50 meters below the surface. Finnish divers involved in the operation reportedly spent days navigating the hazardous cave network before locating the trapped group. Authorities say the recovery mission itself was extremely dangerous due to the depth, narrow passageways, and unstable underwater conditions inside the cavern. The tragedy has since become one of the deadliest diving accidents to strike the Maldives in recent years.
