A tragic skydiving accident in Washington state has left one jumper dead and another injured after a midair collision during a scheduled group jump near Colville, authorities confirmed Monday. Investigators say the deadly impact occurred while multiple participants were descending together during the organized jump event at West Plains Skydiving.
According to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews responded to the scene around 5:30 p.m. Sunday following reports of a catastrophic collision between two skydivers high above the drop zone. Witnesses and staff members reportedly watched the horrifying incident unfold as one of the jumpers appeared to become unresponsive during descent after the impact.

Authorities identified the deceased skydiver as Randy Hubbs, from the Kennewick area in southeastern Washington. Officials confirmed he suffered fatal injuries connected to the midair collision. The second skydiver involved, identified as Nicole Klein of the Colville area, survived the incident but reportedly sustained injuries requiring further medical treatment at a nearby facility.
In an official statement, the sheriff’s office confirmed investigators are treating the case as a fatal skydiving incident involving two jumpers during a planned group descent.
“Authorities are investigating a fatal skydiving incident that occurred at West Plains Skydiving involving two jumpers during a scheduled group jump,” the sheriff’s office stated publicly.
Emergency responders arriving at the scene reportedly found one victim deceased while medical personnel worked to assist the injured jumper. Law enforcement officers, aviation investigators, and skydiving safety personnel are now examining the precise sequence of events that led to the deadly collision.
Midair collisions during skydiving operations are considered relatively rare but can become catastrophic due to the high speeds and complex aerial coordination involved in formation or group jumps. Experts explain that participants descending in close proximity must maintain constant spatial awareness while managing parachute deployment timing, wind conditions, body positioning, and separation distances.
Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed at what stage of the descent the collision occurred or whether parachutes had already been deployed when the impact happened. Investigators are expected to review witness statements, jump footage, safety procedures, equipment inspections, and flight operation records as part of the ongoing investigation.
The tragedy has deeply shaken members of the local skydiving community, where group jumps are often viewed as highly coordinated activities requiring extensive training and communication between participants. Fellow jumpers and community members have since begun sharing tributes honoring Randy Hubbs while expressing support for the injured survivor.
Skydiving experts note that group formation jumps can involve additional risks because multiple participants descend in coordinated patterns while moving at high velocity through limited airspace. Even small positioning errors or sudden trajectory changes can potentially create dangerous situations during freefall or canopy descent.
The incident has also renewed broader discussions regarding skydiving safety procedures, aerial spacing protocols, and emergency response planning during organized jump operations. Aviation and parachuting authorities are expected to carefully examine whether environmental conditions, communication factors, or maneuvering decisions played any role in the collision.
Meanwhile, investigators continue working to determine exactly how the two jumpers came into contact during the descent. Authorities have not indicated whether any equipment malfunction contributed to the incident, and officials stress that the investigation remains active.
For many witnesses and fellow participants present that evening, however, the emotional trauma of watching the accident unfold in real time may remain difficult to forget. What began as a routine group jump above the Washington landscape instead transformed within moments into a fatal aerial tragedy that has left an entire skydiving community mourning
