Afghan national fined 400 pounds following sexual assaults in central London
An asylum seeker living in government-funded hotel accommodation has been fined four hundred pounds after sexually assaulting a fourteen-year-old girl and a adult woman in central London. Abdul Barkeeh Salihi, a twenty-four-year-old Afghan national, committed the offenses in broad daylight while the teenage victim was sightseeing Harry Potter filming locations with her family. Following his arrest by City of London Police, Salihi pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault and one count of criminal damage at Inner London Crown Court.
The sequence of events began on January twenty-eight when Salihi stalked a forty-two-year-old woman along Lombard Street during heavy rainfall. Police reports state that the offender followed the victim closely before striking her from behind as she attempted to step aside. Hours later, Salihi targeted the fourteen-year-old tourist inside historic Leadenhall Market, touching her inappropriately as she viewed the famous filming location for Diagon Alley.
The teenage victim reported the incident to her family immediately after noticing the suspect standing behind her with a smirk. When the family subsequently spotted Salihi entering a nearby Italian restaurant, a heated confrontation broke out between the relatives and the suspect. Restaurant staff instructed the offender to leave the premises after learning of the sexual assault allegations made by the family.
Upon being removed from the venue, Salihi reacted violently by hurling outdoor furniture through the restaurant’s glass windows. Members of the public intervened on the street and restrained the suspect until police officers arrived at the scene. Detectives praised the immense courage shown by both victims during the subsequent criminal investigation and court proceedings.
Judge Ian Darling sentenced Salihi to a four hundred pound fine alongside a mandatory victim surcharge of one hundred and sixty pounds. Additionally, the court ordered the defendant to register on the sex offenders register for a period of five years. Salihi provided the court with a residential address at an Oxford hotel currently utilized for housing asylum seekers.
The court’s sentencing decision has sparked intense debate regarding judicial guidelines for sexual offenses committed against minors.
