Michigan sheriff: A father shot and killed his wife and six children before a fire broke out at the home in Grand Haven Township.

Authorities say a devastating family tragedy has left a Michigan community in mourning after investigators concluded that a father fatally shot his wife and six children before multiple fires were set inside the family’s home.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday that investigators believe Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, was responsible for the deaths of his wife, Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and the couple’s six children inside their Grand Haven Township residence.

Firefighters were dispatched to the home on Riverside Trail on Friday after reports of smoke coming from the property. Once inside, emergency crews discovered the eight family members deceased.

Following autopsies, the sheriff’s office said all eight died from gunshot wounds. The deaths of Amanda Karolkiewicz and the six children have been ruled homicides.

The children ranged in age from 5 to 15 years old. Authorities said the victims included four boys, ages 15, 12, 11 and 5, and twin 11-year-old girls. Two of the children had been adopted.

Investigators said no evidence suggests anyone outside the household was involved. At this stage of the investigation, authorities believe there are no additional suspects.

The Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit is continuing to examine how several fires inside the residence were started. Officials have not yet released further details regarding the origin of the fires while the investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities also confirmed that the family’s pets died from smoke inhalation during the fire.

The tragedy has deeply affected the Grand Haven community. Grand Haven Area Public Schools announced that crisis counselors and additional mental health resources have been made available to students, staff, and families as they process the devastating loss.

Law enforcement officials emphasized that investigators continue to review forensic evidence, digital records, and witness information to fully reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the incident.

Community members have begun leaving flowers, stuffed animals, and handwritten messages near the family’s neighborhood, expressing grief and support for those affected by one of the deadliest family tragedies the area has experienced in recent memory.

Authorities have indicated that additional information may be released as the investigation progresses.
