In the early hours of December 3, 2025, 18-year-old Henry Nowak, a bright first-year accountancy and finance student at the University of Southampton from Chafford Hundred in Essex, was walking home along Belmont Road after a night out with his football teammates. What should have been a routine end to an evening turned into a nightmare that ended his young life.
Nowak was casually recording Snapchat videos to share with friends as he strolled. In one chilling clip, he encountered 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa, who was openly carrying a large shastar – a traditional Punjabi blade with an 8-inch (21cm) razor-sharp edge – sheathed prominently over his clothing. Court testimony revealed Digwa responded to Nowak’s filming by declaring, “I’m a bad man.” Moments later, prosecutors allege, Digwa unleashed four devastating stab wounds on the teenager, including a fatal chest injury. Nowak tried to flee but collapsed in the street.
When police arrived, the situation took an even more disturbing turn. Digwa immediately claimed that Nowak had racially abused and attacked him. Officers reportedly handcuffed the heavily bleeding Nowak before providing first aid. The young student, still conscious at first, later collapsed and died from his wounds. In a grim detail, Nowak’s phone was later found in Digwa’s pocket. Digwa’s mother, Kiran Kaur, 53, is also standing trial, accused of assisting an offender by allegedly removing the murder weapon from the scene and taking it back to the family home in nearby St Denys Road, where other blades were reportedly discovered.
At Southampton Crown Court, where the high-profile murder trial is currently underway, Digwa denies murder and possession of a bladed article in public. His defence maintains he acted in self-defence after a racially motivated confrontation, claiming he feared for his safety in the “heat of the moment.” Prosecutors paint a different picture: a young man openly armed with an extremely large knife far beyond any religious requirement, confronting a slightly intoxicated student (who was under the drink-drive limit) on a public street.
The case has ignited intense debate about knife crime in the UK, police response protocols when conflicting accounts are given at violent scenes, and the tragic vulnerability of young people walking home at night. Henry Nowak was described as a promising student with a passion for football and a bright future ahead. His death has left his family devastated and the local community in shock.
As the trial continues, the jury must weigh the video evidence, witness statements, and the sequence of events captured on Nowak’s own phone. Questions linger about why an “extremely large” blade was being carried so openly and whether the immediate decision to restrain the victim contributed to the fatal outcome.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking on city streets and the complex challenges faced by law enforcement in high-tension moments. Whatever the verdict, Henry Nowak’s life was cut tragically short in what many are calling a preventable horror. The eyes of the nation remain fixed on Southampton Crown Court as justice seeks its course.
