From Isolated Aussie Loner to Accused K.i.l.l.e.r: Chilling Secrets of Simon Carman’s Life Before the Brutal Thailand Teen M.u.r.d.e.r

Simon Peter Carman, a 45-year-old Australian man from Western Australia, lived a largely reclusive existence for years before his arrest in connection with the alleged murder of 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla in Pattaya, Thailand.

Born in Ballarat, Victoria, Carman was raised in the small regional town of Jerramungup and later moved with his family to Albany on Western Australia’s south coast. He worked as a truck driver and mechanic but suffered workplace injuries that left him reliant on strong pain medication. Those close to him noted that this period marked a turning point, as he gradually withdrew from family and friends, preferring solitude. Court records indicate interactions with police, including the suspension of his firearms licence in 2023 after previous ownership of guns.

For much of the past decade, Carman lived in a unit within an industrial complex in Rockingham, south of Perth, surviving on a disability pension and compensation payments. Neighbours described him as a quiet but sometimes awkward and slow-moving individual, occasionally prone to arguments. He reportedly made occasional trips to Thailand before the COVID-19 pandemic and returned there late last year, seeking a lower cost of living and possibly medical treatment for his back issues. In Pattaya’s Jomtien area, he rented a modest condominium room for around $100 a week and took on occasional handyman jobs.

Life in the vibrant but seedy beach resort appeared routine for Carman. He spent time swimming, walking, and interacting minimally with locals. However, his social media activity in the lead-up to the incident reportedly included mixed comments on women’s photos, sometimes inquiring about their locations.

Tragedy unfolded in the early hours of June 25, 2026. According to Thai police, 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla — affectionately known as “Cake” — from Kalasin province, who had recently arrived in Pattaya, was last seen with a foreigner on Beach Road. CCTV footage captured her entering Carman’s building hand-in-hand with him around 3:34 a.m. Police allege a dispute over payment for sexual services escalated, leading to Carman strangling the teenager. He reportedly kept her body in the bathroom for hours while continuing everyday activities like shopping, laundry, and chatting with neighbours.

Later that night, CCTV allegedly showed Carman leaving with a heavy suitcase, returning without it. The suitcase containing the young woman’s body was later found dumped near railway tracks. Carman was arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport as he attempted to board a flight back to Australia, with visible scratch marks noted on his body. He initially denied involvement but later made statements claiming self-defence during a money-related argument, while expressing regret in a recorded message to the victim’s family.

Carman faces serious charges including murder, concealing and moving a body, and taking a minor for sexual purposes. He remains in detention in Pattaya as the investigation continues. The case has shocked those who knew him in Australia, many of whom had lost contact over the years. Tunchanok’s family has called for the harshest penalty if he is convicted.

This incident highlights the stark contrast between Carman’s isolated past and the horrific allegations now surrounding him in a city known for its nightlife.
