Nearly six months after the mysterious disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, investigators say the case remains very much alive—and one crucial breakthrough could still be hidden among thousands of pieces of digital evidence.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos revealed that detectives are continuing an exhaustive review of surveillance footage collected from homes, businesses, traffic cameras, and private security systems throughout the Tucson area. While investigators have already examined an enormous amount of evidence, officials believe additional video clips that have yet to be analyzed could reveal critical clues about what happened to Guthrie or identify the person responsible for her disappearance.
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, vanished from her Catalina Foothills home in Arizona on February 1. Authorities quickly determined that her disappearance was not voluntary after discovering evidence suggesting she had been abducted from the residence.
Since then, the investigation has grown into one of Arizona’s largest active missing-person cases. Local authorities, the FBI, forensic specialists, and digital investigators have spent months analyzing surveillance recordings, collecting physical evidence, interviewing witnesses, and pursuing thousands of public tips.
One of the strongest pieces of evidence remains footage from Guthrie’s Nest doorbell camera, which captured a masked individual outside her home before her disappearance. Investigators believe the suspect deliberately attempted to disable the camera, yet portions of the video were successfully recovered. Authorities continue to hope that additional footage from nearby cameras could reveal the suspect’s movements before or after the incident.
Sheriff Nanos emphasized that no potential suspect has been permanently eliminated from the investigation. Detectives continue to re-examine previous leads while applying new forensic techniques and digital analysis to evidence gathered over recent months.
The investigation has also expanded beyond video evidence. Detectives are conducting additional DNA testing after recovering biological material from the scene. While one hair recovered earlier failed to produce usable DNA, authorities say other forensic evidence remains under examination, including advanced genetic genealogy methods that could eventually identify an unknown suspect.
In another effort to generate new leads, investigators recently released the full text of two ransom notes believed to have been written by the kidnapper. Officials hope that the distinctive wording, grammar, and writing style may trigger recognition from someone familiar with the author. The first note demanded millions of dollars in Bitcoin, while a later message claimed Guthrie had died shortly after being abducted. Authorities have stressed that these claims have never been independently verified and continue treating the case as an active kidnapping investigation.
Savannah Guthrie has repeatedly appealed to the public for help, urging anyone with even the smallest piece of information to contact investigators. Her family continues to hold onto hope that answers can still be found.
With more than $1.2 million in reward money remaining available and thousands of surveillance videos still awaiting review, investigators believe the case could turn on a single overlooked detail. Whether it is an unnoticed vehicle, an unfamiliar face, or a brief moment captured on camera, authorities remain convinced that the evidence needed to solve the mystery may already exist—it simply has not been found yet.
