A peaceful evening at a popular Mexican resort turned into a nightmare when a massive crocodile attacked and killed a 28-year-old man in the waters off Marina Vallarta Beach, directly in front of horrified hotel guests. The tragic incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Friday near the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa, a bustling tourist area known for its scenic views and relaxing atmosphere.
The victim, identified as Irving, a 28-year-old man from Mexico City who was in Puerto Vallarta for work, had entered the ocean when the American crocodile struck. Witnesses described the horrifying scene as the powerful reptile clamped onto his thigh and began violently spinning and dragging him underwater. The attack happened in relatively shallow areas close to shore, catching many by surprise in a location where such encounters are considered rare but not impossible.
Among those who rushed to help were a vacationing couple from San Clemente, California — Jamie Yetter and her fiancé Chris Bury, along with Yetter’s teenage daughter. Relaxing by the hotel pool, they heard desperate screams from the beach and initially believed the man was caught in a rip current. Without hesitation, the couple sprinted toward the water. Bury grabbed a kayak in a brave attempt to reach the victim, while Yetter followed closely behind. “The crocodile had him by the thigh… he was just turning him, taking him under,” Yetter later recounted, describing the chaotic and terrifying struggle.
Despite the courageous efforts of the couple and other hotel guests who entered the dark water to intervene, the crocodile overpowered the man. The victim was pulled beneath the surface and tragically did not survive. His body was recovered more than 12 hours later, approximately 600 meters from the initial attack site, according to local authorities in Jalisco state.
Videos circulating from the scene show the large crocodile with its jaws open, lingering in the area after the attack, underscoring the danger that lurked just offshore.
