Horror Boat Blast K.i.l.l.s British Teen, 16, on Dream Family Holiday – Shocking New Details Reveal Burns Over 60% of Body and Fatal Fight for Life
A British teenager’s dream family holiday in the Caribbean ended in unimaginable tragedy when a tourist boat exploded off the coast of the Dominican Republic, leaving her with catastrophic burns and claiming her life just days later.
Abigail Lainton, known as Abbie, was 16 years old and from Swindon in Wiltshire. On 27 July 2026, she was travelling with her family on a boat returning from the popular Saona Island, part of Cotubanamá National Park, toward the port of Bayahibe. The vessel was carrying around 35 passengers when it suddenly erupted in flames. The force of the blast tore apart part of the deck, sending black smoke billowing into the air and forcing panicked tourists into the sea.
Abbie suffered first- and second-degree burns across 60 per cent of her body. She was among 24 people injured in the incident, with 11 taken to hospital. She was rushed to intensive care in La Romana, where medical teams fought to save her. Despite their efforts, her condition worsened. She died at 9pm on 30 July 2026, three days after the explosion.
Her body has since been repatriated to the United Kingdom. An inquest opened in Salisbury, Wiltshire, heard that the cause of death was septic shock caused by septicaemia resulting from pulmonary oedema linked to her extensive burns. The full inquest has been adjourned to a later date.
Abbie’s two siblings, Carley and Bradley, were also among those hurt in the blast. Their current conditions have not been detailed publicly. Family friend Becky Jamieson described Abbie as a beautiful young woman who was deeply loved by everyone who knew her. She had her whole life ahead of her and should have been enjoying the summer with friends while looking forward to her GCSE results. Abbie was also a cheerleading coach at Swindon Lightning Cheerleading Club, where colleagues remembered her fondly.
Eyewitnesses later described worrying signs before the disaster. Passengers reported that the boat smelled strongly of gasoline and felt overcrowded from the moment it set off. When the vessel accelerated to keep pace with other boats, a loud “pop” was heard. Moments later the front of the boat exploded, throwing people from their seats and sending burning debris flying. Many jumped into the water to escape the spreading flames and were rescued by nearby vessels.
Dominican authorities described the event as a tragic accident at sea and launched an investigation into the cause. Local emergency services, including the navy and tourist police, responded quickly to coordinate the rescue and medical transfers. Officials expressed condolences and pledged support to the family during this difficult time.
A GoFundMe page set up to help the Lainton family has drawn widespread support from the community. Abbie’s death has left her family, friends and the wider Swindon community in profound grief. What began as a joyful summer break in a tropical paradise ended in a devastating loss that continues to unfold through the ongoing legal and medical processes.
