“Life-Changing Horror”: Devoted Mum Loses Arm in Brutal Shark Attack Just Metres from Shore – Family Shattered as Brave Survivor Fights for Future

In a terrifying incident that has sent shockwaves through Sydney’s tight-knit coastal community, 35-year-old Leah Stewart, a loving mother and dedicated deputy principal at Hurstville Adventist School, suffered life-altering injuries in a shark attack at Coogee Beach on June 13, 2026. Swimming between the flags just 20-30 metres from shore on a clear Saturday morning — a routine she followed as an energetic ocean lover — Stewart was suddenly mauled by what witnesses described as a massive great white shark, estimated at 3.5 to 4 metres long.

Bystanders watched in horror as the shark dragged her underwater. An off-duty lifeguard and elite paddleboarder, Charlie Verco, heroically raced into the blood-filled water, pulling the unconscious woman onto his board and paddling her to safety. First responders, including an off-duty doctor and surf lifesavers, applied tourniquets and used shark bite kits to stem the massive blood loss before she was airlifted to St Vincent’s Hospital in critical condition.

Stewart sustained devastating bites to her arms and legs, deep lacerations, multiple fractures, and extreme blood loss. Surgeons performed an emergency amputation of one arm, followed by multiple additional operations over several days. She was placed in a medically induced coma on life support while her body fought to recover. Her family described the ordeal as “shocking and devastating,” noting how this vibrant, full-of-life mother and partner was doing everything right in a patrolled area.

The emotional toll has been immense. Stewart’s young daughter, August — with whom she had never been separated overnight before — waited anxiously. In a heartwarming milestone that felt like a “miracle” to her loved ones, Stewart briefly woke from the coma sooner than expected. Her first words were “I love you” to her mother and partner Fernando, and her immediate concern was for her daughter’s well-being. She has since been reunited with little August, now awake and alert though still facing intensive care.

Her brother Joshua has provided regular updates, sharing that Leah has had challenging days but draws strength from the outpouring of community support and messages. She remains on the path to a long, painful recovery involving further surgeries, rehabilitation, and likely prosthetics. The family has emphasised her resilience as she fights to return to her roles as a mum and educator.

The incident prompted increased drone surveillance and community solidarity, with over a thousand people joining a paddle-out at Coogee in her honour. A GoFundMe campaign launched by her brother has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support her medical needs, rehabilitation, and family during this difficult time.

This tragic event highlights the unpredictable power of the ocean, even in familiar, monitored waters. As Stewart’s family focuses on her healing, the broader community continues to rally around one of their own — a reminder of both nature’s raw danger and humanity’s capacity for compassion and courage. Her journey of recovery is only beginning, but the love surrounding her offers a beacon of hope.
