Neighbor Arrested After 11-Year-Old Girl Vanishes on Late-Night Lake Erie Boat Trip — Second Passenger Found D.e.a.d

In a heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken the Toledo community, 11-year-old Angelique Cunningham disappeared from a recreational boat outing on Lake Erie late Wednesday night, prompting a massive search and rescue operation that has since turned tragic. The young girl was in the care of her 41-year-old neighbor, Kristen Marie Gerrie, along with 38-year-old Jonathan Ciha when the incident occurred. Gerrie has since been arrested and charged with child endangerment, while Ciha’s body was recovered from the water the following morning.
According to authorities, the group departed from Meinke Marina in Jerusalem Township for what was intended to be a casual evening boat ride. Less than 15 minutes after leaving the dock, Angelique was reported missing from the vessel. Gerrie managed to swim ashore and alerted the girl’s family, who then contacted police. A passing boater later discovered Ciha’s body in the water near the marina area on Thursday morning. The Lucas County coroner determined that he drowned, though the exact circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
The unoccupied boat was later located by the U.S. Coast Guard near West Sister Island. Intensive search efforts involving multiple agencies, including the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office, Toledo Fire & Rescue, and the FBI, utilized sonar, radar, and surface patrols in hopes of finding the missing child alive. The operation shifted from rescue to recovery mode as days passed with no sign of Angelique. Search efforts were officially suspended on Friday after crews exhausted available resources, citing challenging water conditions and the passage of time.
Tragically, reports emerged on Sunday indicating that a young girl’s body was discovered near the shoreline in the same general area where the search had been concentrated. While formal identification and autopsy results are pending, the discovery has deepened the sorrow for Angelique’s family and the wider community.
Gerrie, described by some as a neighbor and by officials initially as a babysitter or family friend, was arrested at a Toledo residence on July 3 and charged with endangering children, a first-degree misdemeanor. She is being held on a $50,000 bond. Investigators allege that Angelique went missing while under Gerrie’s care. The case has raised serious questions about boating safety, especially with minors on the water at night, including the use of life jackets and adult supervision in potentially hazardous conditions on Lake Erie.
Lake Erie is known for its unpredictable weather, strong currents, and sudden changes that can pose significant risks to boaters, particularly in the evening hours. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper safety protocols during any water activity. Family members and authorities continue to appeal for any information that could shed light on the sequence of events. The community has rallied with prayers and support for Angelique’s loved ones as they navigate this devastating loss.
The investigation remains active, with officials urging anyone with relevant details to contact Crime Stoppers. As more information emerges from the ongoing probe, this case highlights the vulnerabilities children face even in seemingly routine outings with trusted adults.
