SOUTHAMPTON — In a case that has ignited fury across Britain, 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa has been caged for life after stabbing university student Henry Nowak five times in a savage street attack — then coldly lying to police that he was the victim of a racist assault, causing officers to handcuff the dying teenager as he bled out on the pavement.
The brutal killing of bright, promising 18-year-old Henry Nowak has left his devastated family demanding a full independent investigation into police conduct, accusing officers of treating their dying son “like a criminal” while the real killer spun a web of vicious lies.
This is not just another knife crime tragedy. This is a story of betrayal, racism claims proven false, and shocking failures that allowed a killer to manipulate the system even as his victim fought for his last breaths.
The Fatal Night That Shattered a Family
On December 3, 2025, Henry Nowak — a first-year finance student at the University of Southampton — was walking home alone after a night out with friends. He was unarmed, carefree, and looking forward to the future. He never made it back to his student accommodation.
Vickrum Digwa, armed with a 21cm (8-inch) ceremonial kirpan blade he claimed he carried as part of his Sikh faith, confronted the teenager on the streets of Southampton. What started as a verbal exchange exploded into horrifying violence. Digwa stabbed Henry five times in a frenzied attack, piercing his heart and lungs. The young student collapsed, bleeding heavily, desperately gasping for air.
Instead of helping his victim, Digwa immediately called 999 and told police a calculated lie: he claimed Henry had racially abused him, punched him, and knocked off his turban. Believing Digwa’s false story of a racist attack, arriving officers initially treated the dying Henry as the aggressor. Heartbreaking bodycam footage later released in court showed police handcuffing the critically wounded teenager as he lay on the ground pleading, “I can’t breathe.”
Henry Nowak died at the scene. He was just 18 years old.
Killer’s Web of Lies Exposed in Court
During the trial at Southampton Crown Court, the truth emerged in devastating detail. Digwa’s claims of racial abuse and self-defence were branded a “wicked lie” by prosecutors. Evidence showed Henry had done nothing to provoke the savage attack. The young student was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Digwa, who had a documented obsession with weapons, used the large blade with lethal efficiency. The court heard how he continued the assault even after Henry was on the ground. His attempts to portray himself as the victim crumbled under forensic evidence and witness testimony.
On May 28, 2026, Vickrum Digwa was convicted of murder. Yesterday, June 1, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years. The judge described the killing as “senseless and brutal,” noting how Digwa’s lies had compounded the family’s grief by subjecting their dying son to the indignity of being handcuffed.
Henry’s father, Mark Nowak, spoke emotionally outside court, his voice breaking with rage and sorrow: “Our son did not die with dignity. He was treated like a criminal while fighting for his life. We demand answers from the police. This should never have happened.”
Family’s Furious Accusations Against Police
The Nowak family has launched a blistering attack on Hampshire Police, accusing officers of catastrophic failures in their initial response. They claim the decision to handcuff their dying son based on the killer’s false racist claims robbed Henry of his final moments of dignity and possibly delayed life-saving medical attention.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has now launched a formal investigation into the officers’ actions. Hampshire Police have issued a public apology, admitting mistakes were made in the chaotic moments after the stabbing. However, the family says sorry is not enough. They want accountability, systemic change, and assurances that no other family will endure the same trauma.
“Our beautiful boy was bleeding to death and they treated him like the perpetrator,” Mark Nowak said. “We will not rest until the truth comes out and lessons are learned.”
A Bright Future Stolen Too Soon
Henry Nowak was remembered in court as a kind, ambitious young man with everything to live for. A dedicated student from Chafford Hundred in Essex, he had only recently started university and was excited about his future in finance. Friends described him as funny, caring, and full of life — the kind of teenager who lit up every room he entered.

His death has devastated not only his immediate family but an entire community. Tributes have poured in from across the country, with many using the case to call for urgent action on knife crime, which continues to plague British streets despite repeated government promises.
Henry’s mother spoke movingly of the pain no parent should ever face: “We lost our son in the most horrific way imaginable. And then we had to watch as the system failed him again while he lay dying.”
The Wider Debate on Knife Crime and Policing
This tragic case has reignited fierce national debate about Britain’s knife crime epidemic. Despite statistics showing some reductions in certain areas, high-profile stabbings of young people continue to dominate headlines. Critics argue that soft sentencing, easy access to blades, and failures in early intervention are costing young lives.
Digwa’s kirpan — a ceremonial Sikh blade — has also sparked controversy. While religious exemptions allow Sikhs to carry the kirpan, many are now questioning whether large, functional blades should be permitted in public spaces without stricter safeguards.
The case has also exposed tensions around race and policing. Digwa’s false claim of a racist attack initially shifted police focus, highlighting how quickly narratives can be manipulated and how officers must balance rapid response with careful verification — especially when lives hang in the balance.
Justice Served — But at What Cost?
Vickrum Digwa will spend at least 21 years behind bars before he can even be considered for release. For the Nowak family, however, no sentence can bring back their beloved son. They have vowed to campaign for better protections for young people and greater accountability from police forces.
As the IOPC investigation continues and the family prepares to lay Henry to rest, the streets of Southampton feel a little quieter, a little sadder. An 18-year-old with dreams and potential had his life stolen in a moment of senseless violence.
The message from this tragedy is clear and urgent: knife crime is not just a statistic — it is a destroyer of futures, a breaker of families, and a stain on society that demands immediate, decisive action.
Henry Nowak should be starting his second year at university. Instead, his name is now etched into the long, painful list of young lives cut short by knives on British streets.
May he rest in peace. And may his death finally force the changes needed so no other family has to suffer this unbearable pain.
