Midnight Harbor Tragedy: NYPD Divers and Emergency Crews Respond After Boat Capsizes Near Liberty Island
A late-night recreational outing in New York Harbor turned into a harrowing emergency operation when a 22-foot bowrider motorboat carrying 14 people capsized in the pitch-black waters near Liberty Island. The maritime disaster, which occurred at approximately 10:25 p.m. on Saturday, triggered a massive multi-agency response, mobilizing the New York City Police Department’s Harbor, Scuba, and Aviation units alongside the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and the U.S. Coast Guard to search the treacherous harbor waters.
The rapid emergency response prevented an even greater loss of life as vessels converged on the scene within minutes of the initial 911 distress call. Out of the 14 passengers aboard the overturned vessel, 12 individuals were pulled safely from the water—the majority rescued initially by the quick action of nearby civilian boaters, including the captain and crew of a nearby vessel who scooped survivors from the dark currents. Meanwhile, specialized NYPD scuba divers plunged into the frigid, zero-visibility waters to search the submerged craft, ultimately locating and extracting the final two victims who remained trapped.
The two critically injured individuals—identified by authorities as a 27-year-old woman and a 5-month-old baby girl—were immediately rushed by emergency responders to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn. Despite frantic life-saving efforts by medical personnel, both victims tragically succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead at the hospital. Twelve other passengers sustained minor injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment, with many survivors seen on docks and hospital lobbies wrapped in shock and still clutching their life jackets.
In the wake of the tragedy, law enforcement officials moved swiftly to hold leadership accountable. The operator of the capsized motorboat, identified as 46-year-old Manuel Hernandez of Manhattan, was taken into custody by the NYPD around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. Hernandez now faces 13 individual counts of reckless endangerment. Concurrently, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS), in close coordination with the NYPD, have launched a comprehensive marine casualty investigation to determine the exact mechanical or environmental factors that caused the vessel to overturn, as well as whether the boat was operating as an illegal commercial charter service.
