TEACHER ACCUSED OF SECRETLY SLEEPING WITH TEENAGE PUPIL UP TO 30 TIMES – COURT HEARS SHOCKING CLAIMS
A former chemistry teacher allegedly became involved in secret relationships with two teenage boys at a North London school, including one pupil who reportedly believed she was his girlfriend and later told police they had sex more than 20 times.
Sally-Anne Bowen, now 64, denies eight charges of indecent assault stemming from allegations dating back to the 1980s. At the time, she was 25 and working as a chemistry teacher.
Harrow Crown Court heard that prosecutors believe Bowen abused the trust and authority that came with her position at the school. The alleged victims were aged 14 and 15.
Prosecutor Madeleine Wolfe told jurors that Bowen allegedly developed a particularly close relationship with the first boy, despite the fact that he was not one of her students. They reportedly spent time together during lunch breaks, talked regularly and sometimes traveled home on the same bus.
According to the prosecution, the teenager became convinced that the relationship was romantic. He allegedly believed Bowen was his girlfriend and that they were in love.
The court heard that the relationship allegedly became sexual after an incident involving a pornographic magazine. The boy and other pupils had reportedly been looking through the magazine when Bowen took it from them.
Prosecutors allege that, rather than simply confiscating it, she pointed to an image of a naked woman and made a sexually explicit remark comparing the woman with herself.
The boy subsequently traveled with Bowen to her home in Golders Green, where they allegedly kissed.
The prosecution claims the teenager then became a regular visitor to Bowen’s bedroom during the summer of 1988. He later told police that sexual intercourse occurred more than 20 times and possibly as many as 30.
He reportedly said he was never permitted to spend the night and usually had to leave by around 1 a.m.
The alleged relationship eventually attracted the attention of the boy’s mother. She contacted Bowen after becoming suspicious, but Bowen allegedly denied that anything inappropriate was taking place.
When the teenager continued seeing Bowen after the school holidays, his mother contacted the school. She was reportedly informed that Bowen was no longer working there, although no explanation was given.
The court heard that Bowen later told the boy she planned to leave Britain and stay at a kibbutz in Israel.
A second former pupil has also made allegations against Bowen. Prosecutors claim she spent lunch breaks with him at a café close to the school and that their interactions included kissing and inappropriate touching.
The prosecution says Bowen encouraged pupils to speak openly and joke about sex, creating an environment in which inappropriate boundaries could be crossed.
However, Bowen has denied any sexual contact with either pupil.
When police interviewed her in 2015, she reportedly characterized the first boy as “besotted” with her and rejected his allegations as “pure fantasy.”
The second former pupil came forward years later after discovering information about a Teaching Regulation Authority hearing involving Bowen in 2022. His family and wife encouraged him to report what he remembered.
Prosecutors argue that even if the boys appeared willing to participate in flirtatious or sexual behavior, Bowen’s position as their teacher meant she held a clear position of trust and authority.
The defense position is that Bowen did not engage in the alleged conduct.
She denies all eight charges, and the trial is ongoing. No allegations against her have been proven in court.
