Body Found in Remote Pyrenees Hours After Search Begins for Missing British Tourist Who Vanished Without His Backpack
A body has been discovered in the remote high mountains of Andorra during the search for a missing 28-year-old British tourist, just one day after authorities launched a full-scale rescue operation.
The young man was last seen in the early hours of Sunday after leaving a hostel in the town of Escaldes-Engordany, in southeastern Andorra. He had checked in for a three-night stay but failed to return by Wednesday morning. Hostel staff raised the alarm when he did not reappear and also noted that he had missed a bus he had booked for midday on Tuesday.
Strikingly, the tourist left behind his backpack, travel documents and other personal belongings at the hostel. Local reports circulating at the time of his disappearance also mentioned that he had reduced mobility on the right side of his body. These details immediately raised concern among investigators about his ability to navigate the rugged terrain of the eastern Pyrenees safely.
On Wednesday, Andorran police, working with the fire brigade and mountain rescue services, began an intensive search. Teams focused initially on the urban area around the hostel and a nearby river before expanding operations into the surrounding mountains. Searchers deployed a helicopter and a drone to scan difficult-to-reach zones.
On Thursday at midday, firefighters located a lifeless body in the Tristaina area. The discovery came after a member of the public alerted the Rescue Service around noon, reporting what appeared to be a deceased person. The Tristaina Lakes, a group of three high-altitude glacial lakes in the Ordino parish near the French border, form one of the most popular scenic circular hiking routes in the region. The area is known for its dramatic landscapes but also for steep paths, sudden weather changes and exposed terrain that can quickly become hazardous.
Police have confirmed that formal identification is now underway to determine whether the body belongs to the missing British tourist. Officers from the Public Security, Judicial Police, Criminal Investigation and International Cooperation units had already opened an investigation as soon as the alert was raised, reconstructing possible routes the man might have taken.
Mountain environments such as the Pyrenees present significant risks even to experienced hikers. High altitude, variable weather, rocky ground and the physical demands of steep trails can lead to accidents, especially if a person is travelling alone or dealing with any physical limitation.
