Widow Breaks Silence on Terrifying Mid-Air Plunge That K.i.l.l.e.d Her Husband on Singapore Airlines Flight

In May 2024, a routine long-haul journey from London Heathrow to Singapore turned into a nightmare for passengers on Singapore Airlines flight SQ321. The Boeing 777-300ER, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew, was cruising at 37,000 feet over Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Basin when it encountered sudden extreme turbulence. Within seconds, the aircraft experienced violent changes in gravitational force, plunging approximately 178 feet in just 4.6 seconds. Unbelted passengers and crew were thrown toward the ceiling before slamming back down.
Among those on board were Geoff Kitchen, 73, a retired insurance professional and amateur theatre enthusiast from Thornbury near Bristol, and his wife Linda, then 73. The couple, married for more than 50 years and parents to two adult children and grandparents to four, were embarking on a six-week holiday that would take them through Singapore, Indonesia and Australia. It was meant to be a long-awaited adventure.
As the turbulence struck during breakfast service, Linda was thrown backward and sideways. Intense pain shot through her body. Geoff fell onto her, pinning her against the armrest so she could not move. Passengers nearby rushed to help, moving him toward an exit door area where a doctor began CPR. Despite those efforts, Geoff did not survive. He died from heart failure and lung edema. He had a prior heart condition.
Linda, who suffered multiple spinal fractures, was taken to intensive care in Bangkok after the emergency landing. She remained separated from her husband and only learned of his death two days later while still recovering in hospital. The news shattered her. She has described the moment as devastating beyond anything she could have prepared for.
The incident left 79 people injured in total, with many suffering serious head, neck and spinal injuries. More than 20 required intensive care in the immediate aftermath. Some passengers continue to live with lasting physical consequences years later. The plane’s cabin showed clear signs of the chaos: broken panels, scattered belongings and evidence of the forces involved.
Investigators later determined the turbulence was caused by convective activity linked to thunderstorms and powerful updrafts and downdrafts. The aircraft rose unexpectedly before the rapid descent. Flight data revealed extreme G-force swings that left little time for reaction once the seatbelt sign illuminated. The final investigation report, released in 2026, highlighted the critical importance of remaining belted at all times and noted possible limitations in the weather radar display that may have affected the crew’s view of developing conditions ahead.
Singapore Airlines expressed deep sorrow and offered assistance to those affected. The airline has since adopted a more cautious approach to turbulence management. Several British passengers, including Linda Kitchen acting on behalf of herself and her husband’s estate, have pursued legal claims for damages related to the injuries and loss suffered.
For Linda, now 74, the loss remains profound. What began as a celebration of their life together ended in sudden separation high above the earth. The experience underscores both the unpredictable power of clear-air and convective turbulence and the human cost when those forces strike without warning. Survivors and families continue to seek answers and accountability while rebuilding lives forever altered by those few terrifying seconds.
