In a case that has shocked communities across Michigan and beyond, a couple faces second-degree murder charges after their seven-year-old son, Casper O’Brien, died weighing a staggering 255 pounds. The young boy’s short life ended in tragedy on November 4, 2025, when emergency responders were called to the family’s home in Flint Township following reports of a child in medical distress. Despite frantic efforts, Casper was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
According to authorities, Casper stood only about 50.5 inches tall but carried the weight of a much older individual due to extreme morbid obesity. Medical examiners determined the primary cause of death was dilated cardiomyopathy — a serious condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and weakened, impairing its ability to pump blood effectively. Morbid obesity was listed as a significant contributing factor. Reports indicate the boy had gained approximately 151 pounds in just 21 months, jumping from around 104 pounds in early 2024.
Prosecutors allege that Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, subjected their son to prolonged neglect by providing him with a steady diet consisting almost entirely of snack foods such as potato chips, French fries, and apple juice. The child reportedly had texture sensitivities that limited his food choices, yet authorities say the parents failed to seek appropriate medical intervention or nutritional support. Casper had no regular pediatrician, was not enrolled in school, and showed signs of immobility, including bed sores and rashes. He was described as nonverbal and spent much of his time watching videos with little opportunity for physical activity.
The family home was reportedly in deplorable condition, filled with clutter and trash consistent with hoarding, making daily life even more challenging. Despite having access to health insurance through the father’s employment, the family allegedly missed critical medical follow-ups, including a referral to a pediatric endocrinologist. This pattern of neglect extended to the couple’s five-year-old daughter, who was also found to be morbidly obese and living in unsanitary conditions. She has since been placed in temporary foster care.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton described the situation as one of “cruel and extreme suffering,” emphasizing that the child endured preventable harm through inadequate nutrition, lack of medical care, and an unsafe environment.
