SEA NIGHTMARE: Dad and Two Young Sons Drift for 16 Terrifying Hours After Jet Ski Capsizes Off

A routine afternoon jet ski ride off the popular Thai island of Koh Samui turned into a life-threatening ordeal for a French family when their rented watercraft failed in rough seas, leaving a 50-year-old father and his two young sons stranded overnight for more than 16 hours.
The father rented the jet ski from an operator near Chaweng Beach around 5 p.m. local time on Thursday for a short 45-minute outing with his sons, aged five and seven. Toward the end of the planned ride, strong waves struck the craft, causing the engine to stall. Unable to restart it or call for help, the three were left drifting in open water as darkness fell.
Local operators raised the alarm when the group failed to return on time. Search teams, including district officials, police, rescue foundation members and other jet ski operators, launched an immediate effort using speedboats and additional watercraft. They scoured waters around Koh Samui and toward nearby islands. However, rough conditions with waves reaching several meters forced the search to be suspended after midnight, leaving the family adrift through the night.
Rescuers resumed operations at first light on Friday. Around 10 a.m., they located the trio roughly five nautical miles offshore. The jet ski was partially submerged, with only the front section remaining above the choppy surface. One of the boys was perched on the exposed bow. The father floated nearby, holding on, while the other son stayed close in the water. All three were wearing life jackets.
The family appeared pale and exhausted after swallowing large amounts of seawater during their long night at sea. Rescuers brought them aboard a speedboat and returned them to shore, where medical teams were waiting. They were taken to a local hospital for evaluation and observation. All three were discharged a short time later after checks confirmed they were stable.
The boys’ mother and older sister had waited anxiously on the beach throughout the search. Their reunion was emotional as the family was safely reunited. Officials noted that the group continued their holiday in Thailand afterward.
Investigators are examining the circumstances of the incident, including why the jet ski stalled after only a short period of operation and whether the group may have moved beyond the usual rental operating area. The father described himself as an experienced rider and attributed the failure directly to the impact of the waves.
The episode highlights the risks of personal watercraft rentals in coastal tourist areas, where sudden changes in sea conditions can quickly escalate. Life jackets proved critical in this case, keeping the father and sons afloat through the night until help arrived. Local authorities have indicated they will review safety measures for jet ski operators, including possible requirements for tracking devices and stricter monitoring of rental boundaries.
What began as a simple family outing during a tropical holiday ended in a dramatic rescue that underscored both the dangers of the sea and the determination of local rescue teams. The family survived their unexpected night adrift and was able to resume their travels, grateful for the successful outcome after a long and frightening ordeal.
