TV favourite Nick Knowles has told how a house came perilously close to flooding during a “nuts” mishap on DIY SOS.
The presenter is returning to screens this week with his BBC series, which sees him and his team transforming the homes of families across Britain. Talking about the programme during an appearance on The One Show on Monday (September 29), he shared that things recently went very wrong with a shower.
Presenter Roman Kemp – who was hosting with Alex Jones – said he’d heard there was a “language barrier” issue on set.
Nick quipped: “Yeah, so there’s the language barrier between the builders very often anyway! And quite often we’ve got each other by the lapels in what, in political circles, they call a free and frank exchange of ideas. So that can get quite heated.”
He went on: “But on this particular occasion, we were really hurtling towards the end of the build, about 200 people in this three-bedroom semi. And suddenly the plumber walks in and he goes, ‘We’ve got a bit of a problem with the shower that we’ve put in – it’s voice activated.’

“I said, ‘Well, what’s the problem?’ He said, ‘It’s currently speaking French and we can’t switch it off.’ I said, ‘What do you mean you can’t switch it off?’”
The TV star said somebody starting shouting “Arret”, which is the word for “Stop” in French, but that it didn’t work.
Nick said things can get ‘nuts’ on the show
Laughing, he told the presenters: “Then suddenly a decorator sticks his head out and he goes, ‘Ask Ollie, he was in France for two weeks this summer,’ as if that’s good!
“So we’re like, we’re all shouting things.
“And the shower, because we haven’t got the drain in at the moment, so the shower is filling up with water and is going to flood the rest of the house. And none of us can work out what to shout at this shower.”
The One Show was hosted by Alex Jones and Roman Kemp
Luckily, someone eventually managed to fix it before the house flooded, and the shower was programmed back into English.
“It’s nuts the stuff that goes on,” Nick said of the close call.
The One Show airs at 7pm on BBC One on weekdays. DIY SOS returns at 8pm on BBC One on Friday October 3.
