Rylan Clark has sadly revealed that he planned on taking his own life during a stay at a psychiatric hospital so that his mother Linda wouldn’t find his body.
The TV star, 33, has told in his new book how he ‘hoped he’d have the opportunity to finish it’ after being taken to the facility by his family, when he suffered a mental health breakdown following his marital split from now ex-husband Dan Neal.
In extract of Ten: The Decade That Changed My Future published by The Sun, Rylan also detailed the ‘hell’ of his stint in hospital and how a belt from his dressing gown was discarded from his luggage as he arrived there.
He also described meeting fellow presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford as he recovered after the breakdown – saying that he had never seen Eamonn look so upset after he saw how ‘badly ill’ Rylan actually was.
Speaking about the time leading up to being admitted to the hospital he said: ‘I had to go away, I sat Mum down and told her I needed to be locked up.
‘I said, ‘I can’t do it any more’, I could see in her eyes that she couldn’t believe what was happening to her baby.
‘When I got in the car with my brother to go to the hospital all I could think of was, ‘I hope I’ll have the opportunity there to finish it.’ That way my mum wouldn’t be the person to find me, that was the only thought running through my mind.’
It was revealed earlier this week that Rylan felt he ‘couldn’t carry on anymore’ after his ex-husband Dan left him when Rylan told him he had cheated on him.
Rylan revealed that he had been unfaithful to his now former partner ‘years ago’ but that once he came clean in May 2011 Dan told him their relationship was over and moved out after six years together.
Describing the time after the break up Rylan said in the newly published extract that he became ‘seriously unwell’ and was unable to eat, sleep and talk’ and that he felt like he was ‘having a stroke or worse’.
He detailed how he ‘couldn’t bear’ to live in the house he had shared with Dan so he moved in with his mum, where he would sit for days in the front room without talking with the blinds closed.
Rylan explained how he would go to sleep and ‘pray he wouldn’t wake up’ and that he couldn’t talk without slurring his words.
After Linda then realised she had to take him to get help, Rylan detailed his week-long experience in the hospital saying when he arrived he was taken to a white, cell-like room where everything had smooth furniture with no edges.
In the extract, Rylan also discussed Eamonn and Ruth coming to see him and recalled their shocked faces when they saw how unwell he was.
The star told how it was a ‘wakeup call’ for him after seeing their reaction and that he had never seen Eamonn ‘get upset like that’.
He also told how he turned to excessive drinking after returning from hospital in order to cope and one night he got drunk and messaged his ex.
Rylan described how for weeks after, they were sporadically messaging and meeting up and decided to give their relationship another go, with Dan moving back in.
But after another row Dan left for good and Rylan has claimed that they haven’t spoken since.
It comes after Rylan revealed that he was rushed to the hospital twice after his ‘heart stopped’ last year.
Following the hospital dash, he was administered an injection which helped his heart begin to beat again in a more regular fashion.
He explained: ‘I just remember the shot going in and all of a sudden this feeling from the middle of your body, both ways, almost takes you over, and you just stop and my heart stopped’.
‘There’s just seven faces and this bright light just looking at me. And then I took a breath. And they were like, ‘He’s in a normal rhythm’.
‘I was like, ‘What the f**k is going on?”
He went on to say that family members were convinced that he was only suffering heartbreak however he was sure it was more serious.
‘I knew it wasn’t right. It turned out that my heart had to be restarted. I remember laying in resus and I had all these pads on with all these wires and not understanding what it was’.
He continued: ‘It was only afterwards that I said, ‘What was the pads for?’ And they said, ‘If you didn’t take your breath… because we would have had to restart you electrically. You don’t even think about it when you’re there. So I didn’t just get mentally ill, I got physically ill.’
It came after Rylan revealed his body ‘shut down’ and that his mum Linda was convinced he was having a stroke during his health troubles.
The presenter admitted he couldn’t even talk and had ‘slurred’ speech while taking time away from work.
Appearing on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast, the TV personality said: ‘My body did completely shut down. I wouldn’t eat. I went through a stage where I couldn’t even talk, which for some people might be quite handy.
‘My speech was just slurred. My mum thought I was having a stroke. My body just went. I went down to 9st and I am six-foot-four.’
An avid Eurovision fan, he has been a semi-final commentator since 2018 but his notable absence during the 2021 contest raised red flags among friends.
Rylan continued: ‘Two days before I was due to do Eurovision, everyone knew when I wasn’t at Eurovision something was wrong.
‘If I had done it, I may not have gone on such a quick decline. And when I say quick decline, it felt like minutes. I felt like I’d had the jab and I was shutting down.’
The former Celebrity Big Brother housemate, who claims he hadn’t stopped working since his stint on 2012’s The X Factor, confessed he ‘needed’ a break.
He said: ‘It was hard but on reflection, yes, I needed to stop. Maybe it was an amalgamation of 10 years. I didn’t stop since the day I went on The X Factor.
‘Nothing stopped. I don’t regret stopping. I do feel if I try to carry on, maybe I could have dealt with things better from a personal point of view. I don’t regret that I stopped.’
