On the December 10, 2025 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, country star Jelly Roll broke down in tears after receiving a surprise invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry, delivered via video message from Craig Morgan.
The emotional moment occurred midway through the three-hour conversation, during which Jelly Roll—born Jason DeFord—discussed his past struggles with incarceration, addiction, and personal transformation. As the topic turned to his lifelong admiration for the Opry, Rogan played a pre-recorded clip from Morgan, filmed inside the Opry House.
“Jelly Roll, on behalf of the Grand Ole Opry, you’re officially invited to become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry family,” Morgan said. “Welcome to the family, brother.”
Jelly Roll immediately removed his headphones, stood up, and embraced Rogan while crying. He described the invitation as the highest honor in country music, repeatedly expressing disbelief. “The Grand Ole Opry, dog?” he said, wiping tears. “It don’t get no bigger than that in country music.”
The artist highlighted the personal significance of Morgan extending the invitation, noting that Morgan’s song “Almost Home” provided comfort during his time in prison. Jelly Roll has referenced the track in previous Opry appearances, including his debut performance on November 9, 2021.
Following the episode, Jelly Roll shared the clip on social media, writing that he could not stop “pinching” himself and expressing gratitude to the Opry and Morgan. The video quickly gained millions of views across platforms.
The Grand Ole Opry, established in 1925, selects members based on contributions to country music. Recent inductees include artists who represent diverse styles within the genre. Jelly Roll’s invitation follows multiple guest appearances at the Opry, including hosting duties and performances that blended country, rock, and hip-hop influences.
Jelly Roll’s career has seen rapid growth in recent years. His 2022 single “Son of a Sinner” reached No. 1 on country radio, followed by additional chart-toppers from albums Whitsitt Chapel (2023) and Beautifully Broken (2024). He won New Artist of the Year at the 2023 CMA Awards and received Grammy nominations.
The artist has been open about his background, which includes numerous arrests and prison time before focusing on music and family following the birth of his daughter in 2008. He has used his platform for advocacy, testifying before Congress on fentanyl issues and supporting youth programs in detention facilities.
Craig Morgan, a longtime Opry member and Army veteran, has spoken positively about Jelly Roll in past interviews, praising his authenticity and impact on fans.
The induction ceremony date has not been announced, but Jelly Roll’s addition continues the Opry’s tradition of welcoming artists who connect with new generations while honoring country music roots.
The podcast episode, #2424 of The Joe Rogan Experience, covers a range of topics including Jelly Roll’s weight loss journey, music career, and personal growth. The Opry invitation segment has been widely shared by fans and media outlets.
