A Michigan mother is vowing to search until she finds her missing 21-year-old son, who appeared “disoriented” after leaving a bar early Sunday, authorities said.
Trenton Massey, a student at Northern Michigan University, was last seen on video around 3:30 a.m. Sunday near the Founder’s Landing boardwalk in Marquette. Police said he appeared to be “disoriented” and unstable on his feet in the footage.
Massey’s mother, Sarah Brock, shared a photo on Tuesday sent by her son hours before he disappeared days earlier, while pledging not to stop searching for him.
“Who sends their Mom a selfie from the Bar every time? Trenton Massey does,” Brock wrote on Facebook. “I am so thankful for this last Selfie and these Last words. I am not leaving Marquette until we find you Trenton.”
Brock’s post included a photo of her son holding what appeared to be an alcoholic drink and several messages they exchanged late Saturday and early Sunday.
“I love you and hope you’re having a great weekend,” Brock wrote. “Bar night lol … be careful.”
“Love you thank you,” Massey replied early Sunday.
“Everything OK?” Brock wrote in another message. “Don’t be spending too much money out at bars … you got spring break coming up.”
Massey later replied that money wasn’t a concern, screenshots show.
“I won 400 so we are set 4 the night,” he wrote.
Attempts by Newsweek to reach Brock, 46, of Laingsburg, Michigan, were not immediately successful. She also shared details of a candlelight vigil for Massey planned for Thursday in Corunna.
“Join us in prayer as a community to support our friends,” reads a flyer.
Police in Marquette said late Monday that search efforts near Founder’s Landing had been suspended, with officers to resume early Tuesday. Investigators will focus on Tuesday on the lower harbor of Lake Superior near Founder’s Landing based on information received Monday, department officials said.
“Searchers with specialized equipment and training will be used,” Marquette police said in a statement.
Massey, who was last seen wearing a black and olive-green coat, was likely trying to return to his residence on McMillan Street in Marquette when he disappeared, police said.
An online fundraiser to support Massey’s family has raised more than $24,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.
“Sarah Brock and her family are facing every parent’s worst nightmare: her son, Trenton Massey, is missing in Marquette, Michigan,” the site reads. “The days since his disappearance have been filled with uncertainty, fear, and an overwhelming sense of helplessness. Sarah and her loved ones are doing everything they can to find Trenton, but the emotional and financial toll is immense.”
Brock and her family are incurring significant expenses related to the search for her son, including travel and accommodation costs, meals, and other urgent needs, according to the fundraiser.
“Every dollar raised will help ease the burden on Sarah, allowing her to focus on what matters most: bringing Trenton home safely and supporting her family through this ordeal,” the post continues.
Hundreds of people have volunteered during searches for Massey, including fellow Northern Michigan University students, school officials told Newsweekin a statement on Tuesday.
“The university was closed yesterday due to the winter storm and hundreds of volunteers, community and students, assisted Sunday, Monday and today,” NMU chief marketing officer Derek Hall said.
NMU student Ryder Amesbury said he met Massey, who majors in construction management, at a bar before his disappearance and awoke Sunday to see his photo in newscasts.
“It’s scary,” Amesbury told Marquette news station WLUC. “It was an absolute blizzard that night. Like, I walked home, and I got lost walking home. So, it’s horrible to hear and obviously see, but it’s amazing to see how many people came out here to help search for him.”
