The case of Jamie Varley, a 37-year-old high school teacher from Blackpool, UK, has shocked the nation and exposed horrifying failures in the child protection system. In July 2023, 13-month-old Preston Davey died after just four months in the care of Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32. What began as an adoption meant to give the vulnerable toddler a loving home turned into a nightmare of systematic sexual abuse, physical assaults, and psychological torment that culminated in murder.
Varley, who took a year off work to become a full-time adoptive parent after rising to head of year at South Shore Academy, presented himself publicly as a devoted father. Behind closed doors, however, prosecutors described him using the defenceless child as a “sexual plaything.” Preston, who had been a happy, healthy, and bubbly baby in foster care, suffered over 40 traumatic injuries in those short months, including bruises, a perforated bowel, and bite marks.
Disturbing video evidence released during the trial at Preston Crown Court revealed the extent of the cruelty. One particularly sickening clip, filmed just weeks before the fatal assault, shows Varley deliberately keeping the exhausted toddler awake. The teacher shouts “boo” and uses loud noises and music from Moana blaring in the background to startle and torment Preston, who was visibly distressed and struggling to stay alert. The prosecution described this as a deliberate act of psychological abuse, part of a pattern that included spinning the baby at excessive speeds on playground equipment until his eyes could barely focus.
On July 27, 2023, after what prosecutors say was a final sexual assault by Varley, the couple rushed the unconscious child to Blackpool Victoria Hospital. They initially claimed he had drowned in the bath, but a post-mortem examination revealed the true horror. Preston had been subjected to repeated sexual abuse, indecent filming and photography, and brutal physical assaults. Varley had even recorded videos of the baby in respiratory distress on the bed as he lay dying.
Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley were found guilty on June 15, 2026. Varley was convicted of murder, multiple counts of sexual abuse, and child cruelty offences. His partner was found guilty of allowing the death of a child, sexual assault, and child cruelty. The jury heard how agencies had missed multiple opportunities to intervene despite hospital visits and visible injuries.
During police interviews, Varley denied responsibility, telling officers he would “fight them to the day I die” and protesting his innocence even as evidence mounted. In hospital bodycam footage, he collapsed and wailed for his own mother when told Preston would not survive. The trial exposed a facade of normalcy shattered by months of hidden abuse.
Preston had been removed from his biological mother by emergency care order and placed for adoption. The couple’s home in Blackpool became the site of unimaginable suffering. Varley filmed himself abusing the child while his partner was at work, shared some videos, and even staged misleading footage, such as a toy box “falling” on the baby’s head, to explain injuries to medical staff.
The case has sparked widespread outrage and calls for a serious review of adoption processes, teacher vetting, and child safeguarding protocols in the UK. Experts and campaigners highlight how a seemingly respectable professional could inflict such evil while evading detection for months. The four-month ordeal left Preston with injuries that told a story of relentless torment.
Friends and former colleagues of Varley expressed disbelief, describing him as someone who appeared dedicated to education and children. Yet the evidence painted a picture of a manipulator who exploited the trust placed in him. McGowan-Fazakerley, a financial sales manager, was also complicit in the cruelty and abuse.
This tragedy underscores the critical importance of vigilant oversight in adoptive placements, especially for children with prior vulnerabilities. Preston’s biological family and foster carers had seen him thrive before the adoption; the contrast with his final months is devastating. The release of the videos during the trial has added to the public’s horror, serving as grim proof of the deliberate nature of the abuse.
As sentencing approaches, the focus remains on justice for Preston and systemic reforms to prevent future failures. Child protection agencies face scrutiny over missed red flags, including unexplained injuries noted during medical visits. The case serves as a painful reminder that monsters can hide in plain sight, even in roles entrusted with nurturing the young.
Preston Davey’s short life was stolen in the place meant to protect him. The sickening videos and trial details have left communities reeling, demanding accountability not just for the perpetrators but for the system that allowed this to happen. His story highlights the urgent need for better screening, monitoring, and rapid response to concerns in adoptive and foster care environments.
In the aftermath, advocates hope the conviction brings some measure of closure while pushing for changes that honor Preston’s memory. No child should endure such cruelty, and no parent – adoptive or otherwise – should ever betray that sacred trust in such a monstrous way. The guilty verdicts are a start, but the scars on society from this case will linger.
