A 32-year-old woman from Long Island vanished Friday evening after she leapt from a moving vehicle in a state of panic and fled on foot, prompting an extensive search by her family, volunteers, and law enforcement. Loved ones fear she may be disoriented, frightened, and in need of immediate assistance.
Brittany Kritis-Garip was last captured on surveillance footage in the affluent Oyster Bay hamlet around 8 p.m. on Friday, March 20. She was reported missing shortly afterward, according to News 12 Long Island and Nassau County Police.
Her husband, Fernando Garip, told reporters that his wife threw her phone into a bush before running off. She was last seen wearing black pants and a black jacket with a fur collar when she jumped from the car.
“We’ve been combing wooded areas, rural areas, suburban areas, everything. So we’re just asking for the public’s help here. We really need the public’s help to locate her,” Garip said on Sunday. “We’re going to be at this until she’s home. I don’t care what we have to do, what needs to be done.”
Volunteers have focused their efforts on a one-mile stretch of marshy shoreline near Oyster Bay Harbor after Kritis-Garip’s wallet was discovered on a road leading down to the water, her friend Sarah Castor shared on Facebook. Castor, who is helping coordinate the search, stressed that every second counts in the effort to find her.
“While law enforcement is actively involved, time is critical,” Castor wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to raise funds for a private investigator. The goal is to canvass areas more thoroughly and review leads more quickly.
Since her disappearance, the Nassau County Police Department has deployed aerial resources, including a helicopter and drones, in the area near the East Norwich–Oyster Bay border.
Castor urged the public to thoroughly check any locations that could provide shelter or concealment — such as sheds, garages, pool houses, under decks and porches, beneath boat covers, as well as wooded, marshy, or shoreline areas — on both public and private property. She also encouraged nearby residents and businesses to review their security camera footage for any possible sightings of the missing woman.
Kritis-Garip is described as a white female, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing black pants and a black jacket with a fur collar.
“We believe she was disoriented and frightened, and may think she is in danger,” Castor wrote. “She is not dangerous — she needs help.” She added, “Brittany is deeply loved. We are doing everything we can to find her — and we are so grateful for your support.”
The family and authorities continue to appeal for the public’s assistance in locating her. Anyone with information about Brittany Kritis-Garip’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Nassau County Police Department Missing Persons Squad at 516-573-7347.
This case has drawn significant community attention, with searches intensifying around Oyster Bay and surrounding areas as concerns grow for her safety. Her loved ones remain hopeful and determined to bring her home safely.
