Charlie Kirk, Close Trump Ally, Fatally Shot During Campus Event; Suspect Still at Large
Charlie Kirk, 31, a prominent conservative activist and close ally of former President Donald Trump, was shot in the neck while addressing questions from the audience about mass shootings.
Suspect Spotted on Rooftop?
Eyewitness Emma Pitts told The Guardian: “We just saw his neck jerk to the side, and blood started pouring immediately.” Another student described the sound as “like a loud clap,” followed instantly by visible bleeding.
Videos circulating on the social media platform X show a suspect dressed in dark clothing on the roof of the Losee Center, approximately 200 meters from the stage. Another clip captures the individual running across the rooftop after the gunfire. Campus security cameras recorded the scene, but the footage is low quality, preventing clear identification of the suspect.
Authorities confirmed the shooter remains at large. Utah Governor Spencer Cox called the incident “a dark day for our state and a tragedy for the nation,” emphasizing that it appears to be a politically motivated assassination.
Security Lapses
In the aftermath, attention turned to security gaps at the event, which drew more than 3,000 attendees. Several witnesses reported minimal checks at entry points.
“I had a valid ticket with a scannable code, but no one checked it. Anyone could have walked in,” Tyler McGettigan told NBC News.
Another attendee noted the absence of metal detectors and limited security presence near Kirk. “No bag checks, nothing like that—it felt unusual,” said Raydon Dechene to CNN.
Jeff Long, chief of police at Utah Valley University, stated only six officers were on duty, supplemented by Kirk’s personal security and a few plainclothes officers. He admitted: “We train for scenarios like this and thought we were prepared. Today, we clearly were not, and the results were tragic.”
Trump’s Response
Charlie Kirk was a founder of Turning Point USA (TPUSA) and a key figure in mobilizing young voters for conservative causes, frequently appearing alongside Donald Trump at campaign events. TPUSA, established by Kirk in 2012 when he was 18, focuses on political engagement among high school and college students to promote right-leaning values.
Approximately five hours after the shooting, former President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death on the social media platform Truth, expressing condolences to his family:
“Charlie Kirk has passed away. No one understands America’s youth like he did. He was loved by everyone, especially me, and now he is gone.”
Trump also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in memory of Kirk. According to an official statement, the directive applies to the White House, public buildings, military installations, and U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide, remaining in effect until September 14, 2025.
