🚨 700 FEDERAL AGENTS PULLING OUT OF MINNEAPOLIS — BUT FOR MANY, IT’S NO VICTORY… IT’S JUST A MOMENT TO BREATHE 😔🕯️
After weeks of chaos, protests, and heartbreak, border czar Tom Homan announces 700 ICE and federal agents are leaving Minnesota “effective immediately.”
But in the streets of Minneapolis, it doesn’t feel like triumph.
It feels like silence after screams… a pause to light candles, lay flowers, and remember Renée Good — the devoted mother of three fatally shot by ICE agents on Jan. 7 — and Alex Pretti — the 37-year-old ICU nurse who cared for veterans, gunned down by federal officers on Jan. 24 while trying to help.

The Trump administration’s border czar, Tom Homan, announced Wednesday that approximately 700 federal immigration enforcement personnel would leave Minnesota “effective immediately,” marking a significant drawdown from the aggressive Operation Metro Surge that had deployed thousands of ICE, Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and other agents to the Twin Cities area.
Homan, who assumed oversight of the operation in January following national backlash, cited “unprecedented” cooperation from county jails — now allowing ICE to detain immigrants before release — as the primary reason for the reduction. Roughly 2,000 agents remain in the state, focusing on targeted enforcement rather than broad sweeps, according to officials. The move follows court challenges, protests, and the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents in January.
For many Minneapolis residents, however, the withdrawal brings little sense of victory. Instead, it offers a brief respite to reflect on the losses that fueled weeks of demonstrations: Renée Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, killed on January 7 by an ICE agent, and Alex Jeffrey Pretti, also 37, an intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, fatally shot by CBP officers on January 24.
Good was driving home after dropping her child at school when agents attempted to stop her vehicle during an enforcement action. Video footage and family-commissioned autopsy reports showed her suffering multiple gunshot wounds, including to the head. Homeland Security officials initially labeled her a threat, with Secretary Kristi Noem calling her a “domestic terrorist,” but public scrutiny and bystander videos shifted narratives, sparking widespread protests.
Pretti, who had participated in earlier demonstrations over Good’s death, was shot multiple times after reportedly intervening to assist a woman shoved to the ground by agents. His death was ruled a homicide by the county medical examiner. Bystander videos captured the chaotic scene, drawing comparisons to past high-profile incidents in the city.
Both killings occurred amid Operation Metro Surge, a Trump-directed crackdown aimed at mass immigration enforcement in sanctuary-leaning areas. The operation faced accusations of warrantless entries, masked agents, and excessive force, leading to legal battles and congressional scrutiny. Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike called for investigations, with some urging Noem’s impeachment.
The drawdown announcement drew mixed reactions. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz described it as a “step in the right direction” but urged faster, broader reductions and state-led probes into the deaths. Attorneys for Good’s family expressed cautious optimism, noting the need for accountability regardless of agent numbers. Activists and community leaders emphasized that the partial pullout does not erase trauma or resolve demands for justice.
Vigils continue across the city and beyond. In Minneapolis neighborhoods, candles burn at makeshift memorials near the sites of the shootings. Signs reading “Justice for Renée and Alex” and photos of the victims — Good smiling with her children, Pretti in his nurse scrubs — line streets and social media. Out-of-state gatherings, including one in Lincoln, Nebraska, and another at Temecula Duck Pond in California, have honored them with candlelight ceremonies.
The candles, flickering in the cold Minnesota winter, convey what official statements cannot: profound grief, lingering fear, and a call for change. Residents describe the federal presence as having sown division, with masked agents conducting raids that disrupted communities and eroded trust.
Homan maintained the operation’s success, highlighting arrests and cooperation gains, but acknowledged the need to “turn down the temperature.” President Trump suggested a “softer touch” in future enforcement, though no full withdrawal is planned.
Investigations proceed on multiple fronts. The Department of Justice dropped some related charges after agents admitted “false statements” in one case, placing involved officers on administrative leave. Minnesota authorities, previously blocked from scenes, now push for independent reviews. Congressional hearings have grilled officials on tactics and oversight.
The broader implications for Minneapolis — a city scarred by past unrest over policing — remain uncertain. What happens next could define its future: renewed cooperation or deepened divides, accountability or unresolved pain.
For families of Good and Pretti, the drawdown changes little without answers. Good’s relatives seek transparency on the shooting, while Pretti’s friends remember him as a caregiver who died trying to help. Their stories, amplified by videos and vigils, continue to resonate nationally.
As agents depart, the candles stay lit — quiet symbols of remembrance and hope that the city’s wounds might heal, even if full closure remains elusive.
