President Donald Trump Comments on Cancellation of CBS’s The Late Show

Though the cancellation comes days after Stephen Colbert criticized Paramount for settling a Trump lawsuit, the company said it was ‘purely a financial decision’

On Friday, President Donald Trump expressed delight in the cancellation of CBS’s late-night variety show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

“I absolutely love that Colbert got fired,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The president added, “His talent was less than his ratings.” Meanwhile, Trump also commented on the other two late-night shows on ABC and NBC in the same Truth Social post, saying, “Jimmy Kimmel is next,” and calling Jimmy Fallon a “moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show.”

All three hosts have been critical of Trump during their shows.

However, Trump did have praise for one late-night show, Fox News’ Gutfeld!, which he said is “better than all of them combined.”

Colbert stunned the entertainment world on Thursday when he announced during the show’s taping that CBS would be cancelling his show at the end of the 2025-2026 broadcast season.

Though the cancellation comes days after Colbert criticized CBS parent Paramount for settling its 60 Minutes lawsuit with President Trump, CBS executives George Cheeks, co-CEO Paramount Global, president and CEO at CBS; Amy Reisenbach, president, CBS Entertainment; and David Stapf, president, CBS Studios, said in a joint statement that the cancellation was “purely a financial decision.”

The Late Show’s cancellation comes as Paramount Global awaits FCC approval for its multi-billion-dollar merger with Skydance Media. Earlier this month, it reached a $16 million settlement with Trump, bringing to a close the lawsuit filed late last year by the president and his campaign, which accused CBS News of “deceitful” editing during a 60 Minutes interview with former Vice President and then-Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

As part of the settlement, CBS News issued no statement of apology or regret for the 60 Minutes interview with Harris.

In response to The Late Show’s cancellation, Jimmy Kimmel wrote in an Instagram story, “Love you, Stephen. F*** you and all your Sheldons, CBS.”
