Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have issued an update about online safety and pushing for tech accountability. It comes as the Republican-led US Senate voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to remove a 10-year federal moratorium on state regulation of artificial intelligence from President Trump’s sweeping tax-cut and spending bill.

On the Archewell Foundation website, the statement read: “This week, The Archewell Foundation uplifts Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund grantees, many of whom were influential in the recent Senate vote to remove a 10-year AI Moratorium, which would strip states authorities to act on AI: removing protections for child safety, deepfake regulation, and more.”

It further added: “Their work highlights a need to keep young people at the table where decisions are being made about technology that will shape their futures and all our lives.”

The statement further added: “The Young People’s Alliance, led by Advocacy Director Ava Smithing, played a key role in the removal of the moratorium. YPA mobilized over 800 parents and 100 students to contact their U.S. representatives urging a vote no, while co-leading a letter of 140+ organizations to stand against the moratorium.

“Encode AI, fellow RTYPF grantee, was one of the co-leaders of the letter alongside YPA discouraging what would be a decade-long ban on AI policy at the state level. Their letter led to an almost unanimous 99-1 vote to remove the language from the bill.”

The Archewell statement continued: “The vote to remove this AI moratorium is a small step toward keeping technology safe by design. It is the beginning of a longer fight to ensure AI remains safe and innovative for everyone and exemplifies the power of young people and their determination to make our online world and safer and more empowering space for all.”
