A quiet Tuesday evening commute in Switzerland turned into tragedy when a devastating fire broke out inside a bus in the town of Chiètres. Among the victims was 16-year-old Fabian Keller, who had been returning home after completing a day of work experience as a carpenter.
Fabian had reportedly just finished his second trial day in carpentry training, an opportunity that many young apprentices take as they begin exploring future careers. According to accounts shared following the incident, the teenager was traveling home with thoughts about what he might learn next as he continued building skills in his chosen trade.
Authorities say the incident occurred only a few hundred meters before Fabian’s stop. The bus ride had been routine, like countless other trips taken by commuters and students across the region each day. But the situation changed suddenly when a 65-year-old passenger reportedly set himself on fire inside the vehicle.

According to early reports, the man allegedly poured a flammable liquid on himself and ignited it while still inside the bus. The flames spread quickly within the confined space of the passenger cabin, creating panic and making escape extremely difficult for those inside.
Emergency responders arrived after the fire broke out, but the speed at which the flames spread meant several passengers were unable to leave the vehicle in time. Officials confirmed that six people lost their lives in the tragedy, including Fabian Keller and the man believed to have started the fire.
The loss of the young student has deeply affected the local community. Fabian was just beginning to explore the possibilities of adulthood, learning a trade and planning the next steps of his future. For many who heard the story, the fact that he was only moments away from home when the tragedy occurred made the loss even more heartbreaking.
Investigations into the circumstances of the incident remain ongoing as authorities continue examining what happened inside the bus that evening. Meanwhile, tributes have been shared for Fabian Keller, remembering a teenager whose life ended far too soon — a young person who had been returning from a day of learning about the future he hoped to build.
